Look yourself in the mirror right now. Be vulnerable. You really don’t have a choice.
Sometimes we have to ask ourselves tough questions and there’s no avoiding the truth. This is now time to answer an important question if it hadn’t occurred to you until right now, it should have happened a long time ago.
The question is why haven’t you gone to the side of a tall mountain and shouted into the canyon, so it reverberated all across America, that the song “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes sung by Linda Perry isn’t your favorite song of all time?
Because it should be. Not maybe, not top 5, THE BEST.
You missed on this one. So did I. We all did. Just come clean about it. Like I am right now. It’s OK.
I’m not staring at myself in the mirror right now but it feels as if I am peering into this laptop screen. I’m confronted with the raw truth: I didn’t realize this is the best song ever made until yesterday when I listened to it eight times and thought about the line in the song when Linda says she “feels a little peculiar” and instantly realized this is my favorite song lyric – even better than Steve Miller’s “really love your peaches wanna shake your tree.”
Damn, Linda, how did you sing this song the way you did, screaming and yelling with truth at its core, wanting something you couldn’t get? You felt what all of us feel: yearning.
If a song doesn’t have yearning, it has no chance of being everlastingly top-notch. If it doesn’t have authentic emotion where the singer gets lost in how they honestly feel during the recording – doesn’t fake anything – then it can’t be great.
No chance.
Linda feels a little peculiar. It’s not just a clever song lyric; she really feels peculiar. Don’t we all? She’s focused on a revolution. Been there.
She’s off somewhere outpouring everything to everyone, completely exposed. Daring beyond belief.
She’s asking the question all of us have every day of our lives: “What’s going on?”
Wouldn’t you like to know? I sure would.
All in one song – the big questions, the screaming for answers, talking about a revolution.
Feeling peculiar.
This is all of it.
Look in the mirror again. Know this to be the truth.
