The Tampa Bay Rays find themselves in a hard place under .500 again by four games. They sit six games out of the third and final wild-card spot. Their opponent for the next three games is their division rivals the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are currently at .500 and like the Rays have struggled in September. Boston is four games out of the final wild-card spot. These next three games are vital to both teams. These two teams will play each other one more series as they have a three-game series in Boston to end the season. The pitching matchup for the Red Sox is Nick Pivetta who has a 5-10 record, a 4.24 ERA, and 156 strikeouts. For the Rays it is Shane Baz who has a 2-3 record, 3.28 ERA, and 50 strikeouts.
The last time these two teams met at Tropicana Field the Boston Red Sox they swept the Tampa Bay Rays in mid-May. The Rays were wearing their all-white uniforms with a navy blue cap. The Red Sox were wearing their all-gray uniforms and navy blue caps. The Red Sox struck first in the top of the second inning as Tristan Casas hit a two-run home run. The Rays got on the board in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of Junior Caminero who hit a solo home run. Shortly after that, Josh Lowe would hit a solo home run to tie the game at two. In the same inning, Jose Siri would hit another solo home run and give Tampa their first lead 3-2. Two hitter later Brandon Lowe hit a two-run home run to increase the Rays lead to 5-2.
The Tampa Bay Rays batted around in the fifth scoring four runs on five hits. Most of the runs came off of three home runs they had two solo shots and a two-run shot. The solo home runs came from Josh Lowe and Jose Siri. The two-run home run came from Brandon Lowe. The Red Sox used two pitchers to get the final out. Most of the hits and runs came with two outs. Unlike the Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta, Shane Baz went seven innings giving up just two runs and that would be the two-run home run. He also had six strikeouts and only one walk. The Red Sox had a pinch hitter in the top of the eighth Romy Gonzalez hit a solo home run to pull the game within two runs at 5-3.
The Tampa Bay Rays loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth. The inning started with three straight singles. With two outs Jose Siri got another hit a double scoring three RBIs. The only two Rays hitters that did not have a hit are shortstop Jose Caballero and catcher Logan Driscoll. The total number of hits for Tampa was 12 and this time they made the hits count scoring eight runs. The two big innings were the fifth and the eighth in the fifth they batted around and in the eighth, they were one hitter short of accomplishing that again. The Tampa Bay Rays won the game by a final of 8-3.
