You feel it. In your mind. In your body. In your heart. It’s that time of year. Fall walks toward us. Wake Forest football opens its football season in three nights.

This got me thinking. What is it about football that gets us so excited? Why is it that every year we love to see teams take the field and hope they’ll be successful?

It’s got all of life football — yes it sure does! Massive struggles, pain, incredible highs, friendships, acrimony. Should I quit? I hurt. I hate practice.

Mud piles of memories. Most of all, hope. Hope to win it all. Hope not to get hurt. Hope to reconnect with friends. Hope to make friends. Hope the season never ends.

This is the time, right now, when all the anticipation shoots through the roof. We sense something coming but we’re not sure what it will be. All of us will be watching, gathering, wondering, seeing, standing up when something good happens, feeling anxiety when it doesn’t, wishing we could win every game. Knowing that doesn’t happen much. Yet still hoping. Why not?

We’re days away. Wake Forest and college and high school football fields all over America will be getting chewed up, helmets will collide, dreams will be crushed, and championships won.

Out in the sun. And rain. And amid the clouds. Football will be played. Our skin will get a little sunburned.

This Thursday and Friday night and Saturday afternoon. For weeks and weeks, it will go on and will feel like an odyssey on some ship with a mind of its own. The sea may get stormy and we’ll have to endure it. A choice we won’t be given. Football decides.

What will happen? There will be hitting and gosh I don’t know but I want to find out and so do you. Is this our year?

I got to thinking about all this and then remembered the single best video I’ve ever seen about football. It’s called “The Boys of Fall” by Kenny Chesney. This video and show has it all: incredibly authentic pre-game locker room speeches by zealous coaches; Joe Namath; high school cheerleaders; local coffee shops; mud; rain; lineman all dirty; Joe Montana; well, everybody in football ever; and Kenny Chesney singing about the sport he so obviously and charmingly adores.

In the song he’s reminiscing about his past as a high school football player and the underlying message is he learned who he was during that time, found out what life is about, and remembers it all as something so great I can only describe it all, taken in its totality, as Heaven.

Football.

The boys of Fall.

Here it comes.

For us all.
