CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – With 12 days until kickoff in Tallahassee, the Eagles returned to the Alumni Stadium turf for their second intrasquad scrimmage on Wednesday morning in the crisp air of football season.
Date: August 21
Location: Alumni Stadium
Weather: 66 degrees and sunny
Offensive Highlights: Quarterback Thomas Castellanos flashed his chemistry with Lewis Bond on Wednesday, linking up for the first completion of the day and later for another first down on a great play design. Wide receiver Luke McLaughlin showed out on Wednesday, routinely finding space all over the field, and earning regular targets during his reps. Dino Tomlin left his mark on the scrimmage, including a big first-down gain over the middle from Jacobe Robinson. Robinson and Tomlin joined forces to make the play of the day, connecting on a deep post for a long touchdown catch-and-run. Tomlin found paydirt again shortly after, this time running a great route near the goal line to open himself up for Castellanos. Castellanos had a strong day in the red zone, finding Jerand Bradley and Jeremiah Franklin for scores, both on contested plays that required great throws. Receiver Jaedn Skeete came alive during the second half of the scrimmage, getting open for multiple first downs. On the ground, both Treshaun Ward and Jordan McDonald impacted the offense with strong runs and their ability in the passing game.
Defensive Highlights: On the opening drive, Daveon Crouch set the tone with a sack on third down to force a three-and-out. The secondary controlled the second drive, with Khari Johnson breaking up a sideline pass and Max Tucker making a strong open-field tackle to stuff a screen pass at the line. Defensive lineman Edwin Kolenge had one of the strongest individual performances on Wednesday, forcing a fumble and then recovering a fumble on consecutive drives. Fellow lineman Quintayvious Hutchins picked up two sacks on a single series, with Josiah Griffin assisting on the second. Griffin and Kolenge forced a QB pressure and incompletion on the next drive. Donovan Ezeiruaku picked up a sack on the following drive. In red-zone work, Cam Horsley and George Rooks combined to blow up a rush attempt at the goal line. Daveon Crouch followed suit with a nice individual effort. Amari Jackson made a great play to disrupt a touchdown in the back of the end zone, and Sedarius McConnell and Kwan Williams finished red-zone work with strong individual tackles to prevent touchdowns.
