You know 17-year-old Canadian Summer McIntosh is a swimming sensation. You know she has a chance to beat Katie Ledecky in the 400-meter freestyle at the Paris Olympics, which would be monumental. You know she has a chance to break her own world record in the 400-individual medley, which would also be dope.
But there may be a few things about her you don’t know.
One: In a recent interview with Unfiltered Waters, a swimming podcast, she said during the freestyle leg of her world record 400 IM she was so excited she started screaming underwater – something she hadn’t done before. She said it was the most painful race she had ever done.
Two: While growing up she had Katie Ledecky quotes on her wall to inspire her to become a better swimmer.
Three: She gets extremely emotional and nervous watching her sister, who is a talented figure skater, compete. She knows how hard skating is having done it until the age of nine. She got into swimming because she liked being able to control the outcomes better with her times than having judges decide how well she did. Skating made her more nervous than swimming.
Four: One of her favorite places in the world is a cottage on a lake located two hours from Toronto by car. She’s been going there every summer of her life. She’s a decent water skier but her favorite thing to do is tubing behind a motorboat. While there, she also jumped on the trampoline and fished. Her cousins are downhill snow skiers.
Five: She has an uncle who makes authentic maple syrup made from real maple trees. She says it’s delicious.
Six: She loves Lululemon clothing and wears that attire to swim practice every day.
Seven: Her favorite event is the 400-individual medley because it requires so much toughness.
Eight: The one word she focuses on is “energy.” She’s focused on spreading positive vibes and wants to find energy in relationships.
