Under a cloudy but breezy Florida evening, the USF Bulls were hosting fellow Florida school the Bethune Cookman Wildcats. USF had already played the Wildcats earlier in the year in their house the Bulls won the game 6-5. Jackosn Mayo hit the going-ahead home run to seal the victory for USF. This game concluded their current four-game home series. USF will travel to New Orleans to play the Tulane Green Wave starting on Friday. Once the series with the Green Wave concludes the Bulls will have their longest home stand of the season with eight games at Red McEwen Field. As the game started, the Bulls came out in their all-white and green pinstripe uniforms. Bethune Cookman was in all grey uniforms with red pinstripes and grey caps. The Bulls led the series before the last game 41-9 the Wildcats have not beat the Bulls since 2012.
The first pitch took place at 6:05 p.m. Bethune Cookman had very few in attendance as the trip from Daytona Beach is not a close drive to Tampa. One of the coolest aspects is the game starts with the sunup and by the end it is under the lights. Some of the USF Bulls softball players were in the stands cheering for the baseball team. At the end of three complete innings, there was only one hit which was by Bethune Cookman. Just an inning later the first consecutive hits came and when that happened the first run was scored by the Wildcats. Bulls’ pitcher Dominick Madonna balked in the top of the second inning. USF did not get their first hit to the fifth but Eric Snow who walked before the first hit was thrown out at third. At that point, the Bulls were struggling to get hits.
J. Core the starting pitcher for Bethine Cookman was strong until the seventh inning. The Bulls got consecutive hits on the second hit was a two-run home run by you know Jackson Mayo. The same player that hit the game-winning home run earlier in the year. Matt Rose drove in some insurance runs as the Wildcats made a pitching change. After that the wheels came off for BC, they had some infield blunders that resulted in yet another USF run. The Wildcats had three errors in the game which did not help the cause. As the game headed until the final inning the Bulls lead 4-1. Riley Sheen came in for USF. He allowed some minor hits and then shut it down. He struck out the final three hitters to seal the game for the Bulls.
With this victory, the USF Bulls swept the four-game home stand. They had three wins over the Wichita State Shockers which were conference games. Madonna had a great game despite the bulk pitch eight innings allowed six hits, one run, one walk, and eight strikeouts. That was on top of the Wildcats’ three stolen bases, but it only accounted for one run. It was cool to see Jackson Mayon hit the game-winning home run once again as at the time it put the Bulls ahead 2-1 and that is all they would need. Now it is time for a road trip and let’s take it to the Green Wave of Tulane.
