They could have quit. Things have been bleak. They lost three straight games in the clutch that they had to have – and lost all three. They seriously jeopardized their chances of getting a bid to the Big Dance.

But these guys, Stamina, Hunter Games, Parking Lot, Reid, From Afar Carr, and Marvelous Marsh and Boop, didn’t give up. Today they played with grit and edged Clemson to resuscitate their Big Dance selection status.

Right when they had to have it. Right when the entire season could have gone up in smoke. Right when we had to have it for our emotional serenity.

Right now, today, they outplayed Clemson led by Efton Reid’s 12 second-half points and solid all-around play by Andrew Carr, Cam Stamina, Hunter Games, and Hoopie plus a Parking Lot 3. This team plays selflessly, together, for each other. They’re formidable.

What does all this mean?

It means we all have another week to fantasize that they’ll make the tourney and we’ll all end up in Phoenix at the Final Four in early April and party together all night long.

Experts say they probably have to win two games to solidify the bid. But that’s not ambitious enough nor the script we’re all wanting to play out. It’s not our vision. It’s not what we’re imagining.

No, they’re going to win the ACC Tournament beating Carolina and Duke.

No one expects it. None of the experts truly believe in this Wake Forest team.

But I do. In the three games they lost leading into this one, they didn’t get any credit for playing hard in all three games. They competed. They just ran into three straight teams who were playing well on those nights, especially outside shooting, and were tough to beat.

They didn’t half-ass those games. They got outplayed. They didn’t choke. The other teams excelled. They didn’t let us down. They showed us they still care.

They showed us who they are.

They demonstrated then, and today, that they’re winners.

Watch them win every game next week.
