Maybe One Day Wake Hoops Will Bring Us All Together

Maybe one day we’ll all get together at the Final Four and celebrate like never before our Wake Forest basketball team making it to the pinnacle of college sports. Maybe one day we’ll really do that and all our dreams of that happening will no longer be dreams but peak experiences of our entire lifetimes.

Maybe one day they’ll win it all culminating during the Monday night net cutting. Maybe one day we’ll all praise Steve Forbes for his ability to pull off what no other Wake Forest hoops coach has been able to, lead our team to The Promised Land, Basketball Heaven.

Maybe one day I’ll write a blog about that experience and you’ll read it while flying back from the Final Four or sitting in your hotel and reflect to yourself: “Wow, this really happened. We finally did it, Wake Forest, winners of the national championship. Us. It never seemed possible yet it came true. Life surprises us. Life is truly great.”

Maybe one day that blog will end up being one of many written during that trek that gets compiled into a book that Simon and Shuster want to publish and it becomes the greatest sports book ever written and read by more readers than Season on the Brink and Harry Potter.

Maybe one day those astronomical book sales will make me famous and wealthy and I buy a huge house on the beach and invite all of you to a party there that lasts a few weeks. Maybe one day during that outburst of fun Cam Stamina shows up, and Hunter Games, and Parking Lot. Maybe one day while there I offer Parking Lot an unlimited supply of Shirley Temples he digs so much and we all chug a Shirley Temple in unison to honor Parking Lot, who made the national title-winning shot from the parking lot.

Maybe one day there won’t be any more angst about Duke and Carolina beating us because we will be the team that beats them year after year for 25 straight years. Maybe one day they’ll find it hard to deal with the fact that Wake Forest has a better basketball program than they do.

Maybe one day I’ll be the commencement speaker at the Wake Forest graduation and talk about the championship ride we all went on, what a Wake Forest education has meant in my life, and all of you and our lifetime bonds.

Maybe one day I’ll stop obsessing about all the Cs and Ds I got in Wake Forest classes and focus more on the Bs and As I got. Maybe one day I’ll start to believe I actually was smart enough to be accepted into that school and give myself credit for graduating with two majors in four years despite serious confidence deficiencies and intellectual shortcomings.

Maybe one day I’ll figure out to write with more honesty about how I really feel about everything. Maybe one day I won’t hold back what I want to communicate.

Maybe one day there will be a calmness throughout the world because everyone reaches the conclusion that war, conflict, and being mean to other people isn’t the way to live and never has been.

Maybe one day we’ll all feel more relaxed about the future and not all knotted up and unsettled about uncertainties and fears of getting old and what happens after we die. Maybe one day we’ll be reassured we’re all going to Heaven forever and that place will be 100,000 times better than where we are now.

Maybe one day we’ll be perfectly content with ourselves and have no fears about being replaced by machines, or the Earth getting too hot or the sun eventually burning up the Earth and ending all life here.

Maybe one day all of us will start to realize that giving of ourselves is more important than getting more for ourselves. Maybe one day selfishness will no longer be a thing and selflessness will become ubiquitous.

Maybe one day we won’t worry about what others think of us because we’ll feel sure they like and respect us because people will have learned how to get along and respect each other and are eager – yes eager – to lift each other up and with no interest in tearing each other down.

Maybe one day this year all this will happen.

Maybe one day.
