While sitting on Rehoboth Beach, Delaware this summer on a sunny day by the ocean, my smartphone lit up with a call from a boyhood friend named Mark Richardson.
We hadn’t talked on the phone for at least 46 years when we were eighth-grade classmates. He had gone on to do great things with his life including becoming one of the nicest and most loyal guys any of us could know.
No one “liked” as many of my blogs as he did and I’m sure he didn’t feel obligated to do that. Just encouraging a boyhood friend, I guess, and I needed that.
Anyway, we talked for about 30 minutes about his life and mine, how things had progressed, and our mutual friends. It was one of the highlights of my year; a friendship re-birthed, a concrete example of life spinning about in unpredictably pleasant ways that can’t be planned.
I also went to a beach party this summer and saw a guy, Tommy Haley, I had not seen him for at least 30 years. I got to know him during high school particularly a beach week treat in 1981 when I would sit around and listen to Tommy talk, tell stories, and amuse me like no one could. How could one guy be so funny I still can’t understand; a gifted comedian, all-natural, and a grin while doing so that’s so exquisite.
That night on the beach we talked. I told him how great it was to see him. He cracked more jokes like only Tommy knows how to, and it was as perfect as anything can be.
2023 will also be the landmark year when I first experienced a rock band at the Rusty Rudder. I was skeptical it would be enjoyable but my cousins told me the band was well worth seeing. The band opened with “All These Things I’ve Done” by the Killers and I thought about how cool a song that was to start with right there by Rehoboth Bay, killing it.
The last guy I want to laud is Rick Rubin, a Hollywood record producer with huge successes who came out with a book this year about how to create. He says nothing matters but what you like and to just make things you like and you can’t control anyone’s reaction so don’t worry about it.
Just do what you like. Make things that please you. So I wrote this blog and I like it and that’s all there is to this.
Hope you like it.
