USF Football: Looking Ahead to the UAB Blazers

The USF Bulls are coming off a second straight win where they won for the first time on the road against the Navy Midshipmen. This is a different kind of Bulls team in the last two games against Navy and Rice. In past seasons, if they made a mistake, they would just seem defeated. This year, under Alex Golesh, this team fights. They do not let small mistakes bother them. This will be the second conference road game. Once again just like the first conference game, they will face a new member of the conference. The UAB Blazers are that opponent. Kickoff will be at 4 p.m. EST at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama. The Blazers are coming off a loss to the Tulane Green Wave.

So far in 2023, the UAB Blazers are 1-4. Their only win came in the first game of the season against the North Carolina A&T Aggies. Since then, they have had three straight losses. The three non-conference games have all been defeats to GA Southern, Louisiana, and the number one Georgia Bulldogs. The game last week was close going into the half as they led the Green Wave 17-14. The second half is when it came unraveled. UAB only scored three points and that came in the fourth quarter.  The Blazers are under former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer. UAB will try and stay balanced on offense with the run and pass. They were close last week while playing Tulane. On defense, they will have to try and stop the USF Bulls running attack. If they do not it will be a long game.

The USF Bulls are coming off what many say best game they have played all season. It was nice to see that many Bulls fans made the trip to Annapolis at the Naval Academy. In this game, like the Blazers, the Bulls lead at half 23-20. Unlike UAB, the Bulls scored 21 points and only allowed Navy to score 10. One of the biggest plays came on special teams as USF blocked an extra point and returned it for two points. The defense did well keeping one of the most complex offenses in all of college football with the Midshipmen in check.

The offense is starting to look very good. Byrum Brown is maturing in front of our eyes. He is a dual-threat quarterback. Brown will be a threat against the UAB defense. Look for USF to continue to have the same game plan from the past two games.

This game will be interesting because the UAB Blazers have shown they can win despite only having one win. They will have to keep the mistakes to a few. The USF Bulls most likely will continue to have the same game plan from the past two games which have both been wins. Both teams will be throwing the ball. USF will use the running game to keep the Blazers off track. IF UAB can pull off a win it could get their season back on track. On the other hand, if USF wins it will be the fourth win of the season. With the win last week, they have totaled the same number of wins from the past two seasons. Looking forward to a fun game on Saturday afternoon.
