One of hockey’s greatest careers finally has an ending date. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin announced Monday that the 2026-27 season will mark his final NHL campaign. The announcement ends months of questions surrounding the future of “The Great Eight.” Ovechkin informed his Capitals teammates about his decision Monday morning. Now, the NHL’s greatest goal scorer will begin his final trip around the league. It should become one of hockey’s biggest stories throughout the season. Every road game will provide another opportunity for fans to appreciate a player who changed hockey history. For Washington fans, however, the farewell will carry considerably more emotion. Ovechkin has never played for another NHL organization.
One final season in Washington
Ovechkin signed a one-year contract with Washington in July. At that point, he stopped short of calling 2026-27 his final season. He simply wanted another opportunity to compete. However, Ovechkin has now removed all uncertainty. This season will represent his 22nd and final NHL campaign. The 41-year-old remains remarkably productive despite his age. Ovechkin scored 32 goals and recorded 64 points during the 2025-26 season. He also played all 82 games. Washington’s captain has now led or shared the team lead in goals during every NHL season. That incredible streak spans 21 seasons. Therefore, Ovechkin will not spend his final season simply collecting farewell gifts. He can still score. He can still help Washington win. Most importantly, he still wants another opportunity to compete for the Stanley Cup.
The Greatest goal Scorer Ever
Ovechkin will retire with his place in hockey history already secure. He enters his final season with an NHL-record 929 regular-season goals. Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky’s legendary career mark during April 2025. Gretzky finished his career with 894 goals. For decades, many hockey fans considered that record almost untouchable. Ovechkin proved otherwise. However, his scoring accomplishments extend far beyond that famous record. He entered this season with 331 power-play goals. Ovechkin also owns NHL records for game-winning goals and overtime goals. He holds the record for road goals. Additionally, he owns the record with 14 seasons containing at least 40 goals. Ovechkin has recorded 20 seasons with at least 30 goals. He shares the NHL record with nine 50-goal seasons. Those numbers explain why Ovechkin belongs among hockey’s greatest players.
More than the goal record
Some fans will immediately remember Ovechkin’s pursuit of Gretzky. However, his career represents much more than one record. Washington selected Ovechkin first overall during the 2004 NHL Draft. He immediately became the face of the Capitals. Ovechkin won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie after the 2005-06 season. Then the individual awards started piling up. He has won three Hart Trophies as the NHL’s most valuable player. Ovechkin also collected nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies as the league’s leading goal scorer. However, one trophy mattered more than everything else. Ovechkin finally brought Washington the Stanley Cup For years, critics questioned whether Ovechkin could lead Washington to a championship. Those questions disappeared in 2018. Washington finally broke through after years of playoff disappointment.
The Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games during the Stanley Cup Final. Ovechkin scored 15 goals during that postseason. He also finished with 27 playoff points. Then he lifted the Stanley Cup for the first time. Ovechkin also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. That championship changed his legacy forever. He was no longer simply an incredible goal scorer. He became a Stanley Cup champion. The celebration that followed also became unforgettable. Few players have ever displayed more pure joy while celebrating a championship.

Washington has one more opportunity The Capitals now know exactly what sits ahead. There will not be another Ovechkin season after this one. That reality adds urgency to Washington’s championship hopes. The Capitals missed the playoffs last season. However, management aggressively strengthened the roster during the offseason. Washington added Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner. The Capitals also added defenseman Vincent Desharnais. Meanwhile, younger players continue taking larger roles.
Ryan Leonard gives Washington an important young offensive weapon. Cole Hutson also provides another promising piece on defense. Washington clearly did not build its roster for a sentimental farewell tour. The Capitals want to win. Ovechkin already started his final season Washington opened its season Friday against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes. The Capitals delivered an impressive 5-2 road victory. Ovechkin started his 22nd NHL season alongside Leonard. Washington followed that victory with a trip to Tampa Bay. Now, every remaining game carry additional meaning. Every arena will know that Ovechkin will not return as an NHL player. Opposing organizations will likely honor him throughout the season.
Fans will arrive early. They will take pictures. Many will wear Ovechkin jerseys despite supporting opposing teams. That happens when legends say goodbye. One final ride for The Great Eight Sports fans rarely knows exactly when they are watching history for the final time. This season will provide that opportunity. Every Ovechkin goal will extend the NHL record. Every power-play goal will add another number to an extraordinary career. All Capitals victory will move Washington closer toward one final playoff run. However, Ovechkin’s impact cannot simply fit inside a statistics sheet. He helped transform hockey in Washington. He became one of the NHL’s most recognizable stars. His physical playing style separated him from many elite goal scorers.
Ovechkin could score from his famous left-circle position. However, he could also deliver punishing hits and play with tremendous emotion. That combination made him different. Enjoy the final season Hockey fans have debated Ovechkin’s place among the greatest players for years. Those arguments will continue long after he retires. However, everyone should appreciate what happens next. One of hockey’s greatest players has reached the final chapter. Ovechkin enters his last season as the NHL’s career goals leader. He already owns a Stanley Cup. Ovechkin already owns three Hart Trophies. He already changed the Washington Capitals forever. Now, only one question remains. Can Ovechkin finish his legendary career with one more magical postseason run? Washington has an entire season to answer that question. After that, the NHL will say goodbye to The Great Eight.
It will be sad to see Ovechkin, but he has a legendary NHL career.
