One day while on the beach 42 years ago, Sammy Sportface grappled with what to do with the rest of his life weighing three options: accept a full scholarship to play basketball at the University of Massachusetts; attend Wake Forest University and become an intellectual; or go to Hollywood and become a movie star. He chose to become an intellectual at Wake Forest.
When not studying the classic works of literature, in his spare time Sportface became the greatest intramural athlete since the school was founded in 1834.
He led his teams to campus championships in softball and water polo and beat the Eps single-handedly in hoops his senior year.
His decision to go to Wake Forest is paying off on multiple fronts. He has been an avid fan and season ticket holder for many years. He has formed new friendships and relationships due to his association with Wake.
And he will also be the first Wake Forest intramural athlete to be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. A bronze life-size statue of Sportface — looking exactly like he does in the picture on the beach below — will be placed alongside the Demon Deacon statue at the front entrance of the football stadium.
