Delaware: A Rare Caribbean Paradise

Maybe you’ve been to the Virgin Islands or Jamaica or some other idyllic island getaway that you would swear is the most gorgeous place you’ve ever seen.

And maybe you won’t believe this: I’m going to a Caribbean-like place today in the state of Delaware. Yes, in Delaware.

Most people I talk to don’t seem to be aware of this, but if you take a short boat ride from Bethany Beach Bay straight westward in about a mile you’ll arrive at a boat dock next to a huge island of Caribbean-beautiful tiki bars.

I guess people don’t know about it because they have to take a boat to get there. I found out about this Heavenly spot a few years ago on a boat ride with the fellas, the guys I grew up with.

Before taking these boat trips, I had no idea this place was out there. An island vibe, scattered green trees, sand under your feet, big bars, food, and space all around. Fun to be had everywhere you turn. Beautiful beaming white boats.

Sit on the boat and drink cool beverages. Or get off the boat and hang out at the Paradise Grill Bar. Order an Orange Crush or four. Soak in the sun, and cool off your insides with chilly drinks.

Corn hole? Yes, you can play that. Want a hamburger with extra barbecue sauce? Order that.

Today we’re taking this timeless trek that has become an annual ritual for the fellas to get together for this day of rest out on the water and grooving without agendas around the island scene.

In Delaware.

This is the start of my fourth week at the Delaware Shore, the longest stint I’ve spent here at one time since the summer I spent here in college. Back then I lacked the perspective of having lived a long and full life so couldn’t fully appreciate my surroundings.

During these four weeks, I’ve been struck by the all-encompassing visual beauty of this entire beach area spanning all around Bethany and a few miles north to Dewey and Rehoboth Beaches.

This place is beautiful. Full of little delights like the glistening and still water of Silver Lake heading into Rehoboth decorated on shore with white Adirondack chairs. I took a bike ride through North Shores for the first time in my life and couldn’t believe how attractive the houses were, looking so fine and luxurious. It was quiet back there so I rode around those roads a few times feeling the soft cool breeze on my face. Sleepy Joe lives back there. He was asleep and that intensified the relaxed feeling.

Then there’s the back deck of the Rusty Rudder where I spent time with my sister last night having a virgin pina colada as the sun went down, boats parked near the dock, and a lady walked her in the water done up in a bikini. A singer added to the atmosphere from the stage.

Friday night Happy Hour at the Rudder.

I recommend doing that.

Maybe it’s getting older that has me feeling more appreciative of how beautiful this place is. Maybe I realize I only have so many years left to visit this place and that brings clarity to how you feel about a place. Finite feelings may sharpen our insights or at least bring them out.

Maybe this is simply me feeling appreciative and communicating that, nothing more and nothing less, this is a gorgeous and stunningly appealing beach area I am so glad to be spending time enjoying.
