It has all come down to this in college hockey. The Frozen Four is just a short week away. In the final four, we have three number-one seeds and one number-two seed. The final four teams are the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Michigan Wolverines, Quinnipiac Bobcats, and Boston University Terriers. The Wolverines are making a record 27th appearance in the Frozen Four. They beat the Golden Gophers in the Big Ten championship. Minnesota and Boston University will be making their 23rd trip to the Frozen Four. The Quinnipiac Bobcats are making just their third overall appearance. The semifinals will take place on April 6th with the championship game happening on April 8th. It will take place at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida home of the three-time Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning.
In the first game, the puck will be dropped at 5 PM EST and will feature the Boston University Terriers and Minnesota Golden Gophers. The second game will start at 8:30 PM EST and it will be the Quinnipiac Bobcats and Michigan Wolverines. The championship game will drop the puck at 8 PM EST. Here is how we got to the Frozen Four. The Manchester region is where the Terriers came out of. They beat the Western Michigan Broncos 5-1. In the final game in the region, the Terriers beat Cornell 2-1. The Fargo region was won by the Minnesota Golden Gophers. They started with a 9-2 win over Canisius. Then they went on to beat St. Cloud State 4-1 to move on to the final four. Now, these two teams will meet each other in the first semifinal game.
The other two teams started in the Bridgeport region. That is where the Bobcats of Quinnipiac won. Most considered them the best team in college hockey. They beat Merrimack 5-0 and in the final game beat Ohio State 4-1 to move into the final four. The final region took place in Allentown. This is where the Big Ten champion the Michigan Wolverines played and won. In the first part, they dominated Colgate who beat Quinnipiac and Ohio State but fell to the Wolverines 11-1. In the final game, they beat a fellow Big Ten team in the Penn State Nittany Lions 2-1 in overtime. This could be the better of the two final two games in the Frozen Four. This will be a true test for both teams because they probably will be playing the best team they have matched up with all year.
Let’s look at all the matchups. If the Boston University Terriers win, they play either Quinnipiac or Michigan. The Terriers have not played the Bobcats but are 1-1 against the Michigan Wolverines. If the Minnesota Golden Gophers win, they have a chance to get back at the Michigan Wolverines for their win in the Big Ten Championship. They have also not played the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The Golden Gophers and Bobcats have gone back and forth for the top spot in college hockey and if they both win, we could see who the real number one team is. It could be an all-Big Ten final if Michigan and Minnesota both win. Maybe we will see Boston University and Quinnipiac. We will all find out next Thursday and next Saturday we will have a national champion.
