Yet Another Torrid Summer Romance Ends — Today

Today we part ways. Today we end our summer romance, a torrid tryst, the emotional one we always have whenever we reconnect.

Today you stay where you are as you always do and as you always have for thousands or millions of years. Today I drive away, inland, back to a world you’ve never known and don’t need to know, a world about which you are forever unfamiliar.

Today I go back to the world of the anti-you, the world of reality, the life of brass tacks where sand is elusive and you aren’t there.

Today you remain. You never go anywhere. Which is why I’ve always known where I can find you ever since I was a baby, 59 years ago, ever since my mom was a baby and her mom was a baby, and so on.

We always know where you will be in Summer or Fall or Spring or Winter no matter our age or yours. You are there. You were there. You will be there tomorrow. It’s a lifetime guarantee.

We had quite a time this summer, you and me, like Sandra Dee and Danny Zuko taking silly photos of each other near the rocks, like Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello in the 1950s movies, like Bo Derek in “10.” We hung out, checked on each other, and dug our vibes.

You’ve seen it all: the bikinis, the thongs, the sandcastles, the boardwalk fries, the lifeguards, the little kids riding their rafts and boogie boards and crashing into you. You’ve played host to the great white sharks and whales and horseshoe crabs.

From your perspective, it must be fascinating yet confusing. Who are these people? Where did they come from? And how come they only stay for a while and then leave? They never stay. You do. But they don’t. Do you ever feel used or betrayed? Are you sometimes wild and dangerous because you fear getting too close to any of us?

Today you’re out there being yourself, doing what you always do with no plans to change how you roll. Today is just another of a million days that are the same for you. You don’t sleep. You’re always where we expect you to be. You will always be there for me and for us and yet we aren’t always there for you.

Today, do you feel at least disenchanted with me leaving your sight once again suddenly without much more than a blog written about you? Or maybe you don’t have such feelings. Probably not. But we can’t be sure. You’re too hard to understand, a massive mystery. Who are you?

Today is not like the past 21 days we’ve spent together with you waiting each day for me to show up and look at you with admiration and wonder about you. Today is the day I don’t come see you like a friend visiting another friend’s house.

Today is the day we go silent. Today is the day we lose one another, not forever but for too long, for a while, probably until next year when we fall in love all over again.

But know this: Today you remain my first love. You will always be my first love.

Today it’s hard to break up – yet again.

Goodbye, Atlantic Ocean.
