Sun Rises From the Atlantic — On Happy Friday

Woke up in a tizzy. Had to get the trash out before the rambunctious and unpredictable trash collectors came by and dumped our garbage in the incinerator and heaved our cans all over the lot.

While doing this, I noticed out of the corner of my eye a yellowish-orange ball off far over yonder, beyond the dunes, out over the great Atlantic Ocean.

The sun in all its glory was rising.

Shirtless and in only drooping shorts and flip-flops – an unsightly and aging man with bed hair in all his splendor — I felt the circular ball of fire pull me towards it however trillion miles away it actually is even though it seems to be just over the horizon of the water, maybe a mile out.

Walking onto the beach, I see people sitting quietly, many more than I expected. Lined up almost in perfect sync some 20 feet from the crashing waves, at least 50 people spread out for a hundred yards at 6:10 am East Coast Time.

Some were taking pictures, most just sitting looking towards the water, no doubt affected by the sun’s awesomeness and thinking about something such as the wonders of the universe, how many times the sun has risen, how many waves have crashed onto this here Bethany Beach, Delaware since the beginning of time.

The overriding mood was quiet and serene. And beautiful. Being around a bunch of people being quiet is unusual and striking in a good way. You realize we can all be together without saying anything. There was no need to; nature was speaking for all of us.

The noisiest of sounds came from the seagulls floating around like butterflies. They were probably amazed at the scene also like humans were, but just can’t express that in words. They make chirping noises. They, too, get inspired by the rising sun it seems.

A man and woman at least 70 years old sit in their beach chairs. Something compelled them to get up to marinate in this marvel: a resplendent, enriching, and beautiful rising of the sun in the East. Something compelled everyone on that beach to be there for this moment.

The day was beginning. Their lives were beginning again. Life keeps beginning.

It was Friday. Another weekend in kick-off mode. Like weekends have kicked off who knows how many times on this beach, in this place, by this water, with the sun on the ascent.
