With summer now firmly in place, the time has come to look ahead at what next winter’s basketball season could look like in America East. This week we look at the off-season of the Albany Great Danes as they look ahead to the 2022-23 season. The team has added four players to next season’s team through the transfer portal and one recruit l. Let’s take a look at who they are and how they fit.

Malik Edmead joins the program after spending two seasons at Merrimack College of the Northeast Conference. The 5-10 guard from Deer Park, NY. averaged 9.4 points per game last season. He also averaged two rebounds and dished out 79 assists, while shooting .439 from the field. He appeared in 30 games for the Warriors including 12 starts. He scored a season-high 19 points in a contest against Bryant College on Jan.21. As a freshman, Edmead was in 17 of the 18 games played earning Northeast Conference All-Rookie selection. During his career at Deer Park High School, Edmead finished his high school basketball career with 1,700 points.

Japannah Kellogg III has transferred to Albany from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. The 6-8 guard out of Ames, Iowa played two seasons at Green Bay after redshirting his freshman year. Last year he played in 27 games in which he made 21 starts. He averaged 6.7 points and 107 total rebounds while logging 24 minutes a night. His best game came on December 12 when he scored 15 points vs Kansas State. For the season, Kellogg III shot .486 from the field. In 2020-21, Kellogg III made 10 starts and played in 24 games overall for the Phoenix. He shot .476 from the field, averaged 4.5 points, and 2.8 rebounds a game.

Sarju “Juice” Patel joins the program after spending the past three years at Cornell University. The 6-3 guard from Daleville, Va. arrives in upstate New York after redshirting his first year 2019-20 because of NCAA transfer regulations. The very next year was lost due to the Covid-19 pandemic as the Ivy League decided not to play. This season he and his team finally got back to playing basketball. Patel was named team captain and averaged 9.4 points, 3.5 boards, and one assist. He shot 47% from the field in 26 starts. A very good student in the classroom, Patel was named Academic All-American Ivy League team as the school representative. Patel was with VMI for two years before heading to Cornell. He averaged 10 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and one steal. He shot 42% from the field, and 35 % from three-point range in 29 games.

The lone recruit is Marcus Jackson, a 6-3 guard from Amsterdam, NY. He completed his high school career at Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA. in which he scored 27.9 points, 9.2 assists, and 5.7 steals. There is no question that coach Dwayne Killings is looking for guard play to be at the forefront of what Albany wants to do on offense next year. The question does remain: will there be enough playing time for these guys, or will some adjustment need to be made.
