Fantasy football is coming back soon and it’s almost time to draft. Most drafts aren’t until July or August. It’s important to do your homework first. Here are some of the top players and strategies you’ll want to consider.
1. Draft three Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Mixon, Ja’Marr Chase, and Joe Burrow: This is a bit of a longshot strategy that’s almost guaranteed to not happen but some lucky fantasy football owners may be able to do this if the opportunity presents itself. The Bengals had one of the most fearsome offenses in the NFL last year and this group could’ve been one of the reasons that Cincinnati could’ve won the Super Bowl if not for Burrow’s injury during that game. Now Burrow has a better offensive line and this offense will do big things.
2. Trust the rookies:
There are several good rookies to choose from but it is best to wait until at least round 5 to draft one of them. There aren’t as many top rookies to draft at multiple positions but the receivers will provide fantasy football owners with plenty of depth. The top rookie wide receiver to draft is Treylon Burks and it’s not even close. He has veteran Ryan Tannehill throwing him the ball. The Titans have one of the top running backs in the NFL with Derrick Henry. Burks is now the Titans number one receiver without A.J. Brown and Julio Jones on the roster. Burks is also a scheme fit. He plays just like A J. Brown. Other top rookie receivers to consider are Jets Garrett Wilson, Chiefs Skye Moore, Packers Christian Watson (who could be the Packers number one receiver statistically with all the changes on offense), and Saints Chris Olave. It’s important to consider Tight End Trey McBride as a viable backup Tight End. Running Back Breece Hall could be a highly valuable steal.
3. To take a running back or receiver round one… That is the question.
There is always a debate between picking a receiver round one and taking a running back. It’s hard to say there’s a “correct” answer either way. The best answer is definitely to take one of these positions in the first round. Most fantasy football owners will say running back without a second thought. However, that is often a reaction answer without taking the situation of a fantasy football owner into account. It’s important to think about which draft pick you have and who’s already off the board. There is no so thing as an easy answer to this question. What if you have pick number four? The first three fantasy football owners took wide receivers, conventional strategy is already out the window at this point. Chances are, you’re taking a running back with that fourth overall pick without really putting much thought into it. That doesn’t necessarily mean trust the rankings in your league. Virtually every league will have Panthers Christian McCaffrey and Giants Saquon Barkley listed as number one and two. However, both have an extensive injury history and are risky picks to make in round one. Browns Nick Chubb, Packers Aaron Jones, and Titans Henry would be better choices.
4. Establish depth at receiver
No position in fantasy football will make you win games more easily than this. Three top-tier receivers can net you 45-60 points per game easily. I’m some cases if two or three of your receivers have career days, then we might as well have your opponent call you on the phone to concede! Just kidding but all jokes aside, receiver is arguably the most important position in fantasy football because of the overall number of points each one can get. Receivers like Seattle’s Tyler Lockett and Cowboys ‘ receiver Michael Gallup are good mid to late-round receivers.
5. Wait until the last round to draft your kicker
There’s nothing more embarrassing than taking a kicker too early. You don’t need to reach for Justin Tucker before the final round.
