March 20th, 2021 was the first loss Jackson State took under the Coach Prime era. Alabama State defeated the previously undefeated team 35-28 at home. This could’ve been viewed as a message for Jackson State stating they are going to have to fight in this conference, no easy wins just because they have Primetime Deion Sanders as their head coach. Fast forward to the following Fall 2021 season the two teams met again, this time playing in Jackson, MS. The Hornets had to travel to JSU and play them on their homecoming. This didn’t end well for the Black and Gold as they lost 28-7 against the Tigers. Payback for trolling Coach Prime after the first loss last spring season.

Now heading into the 2022 season, the series is 1-1. Jackson will return to Montgomery, Al for the Hornets homecoming this time.

After a disappointing 2021 season, Alabama State made a change at head coach going from Donald Eley to former NFL player and ASU alum Eddie Robinson Jr, son of SWAC Legend Eddie Robinson Sr.

So far, Coach Robinson and his staff have already made some serious moves. 22 players signed with the Hornets in his first signing class. Here are some notable players who have signed or committed:

La’Vontae Shenault is a wide receiver from Colorado. He was a three-star prospect out of high school and caught 23 passes for 253 yards in two seasons with the Buffaloes. He has an older brother Laviska Shenault, a former Colorado star and current Jacksonville Jaguar.

Mychal Victor, Defensive back from UNLV.  He was rated as a three-star prospect out of high school. Victor played in six games for the Rebels last season, recording two tackles.

Dematrius Davis, Quarterback committed from Auburn football transfer quarterback. Davis was a four-star recruit who was rated No. 223 overall and No. 24 at his position in the 2021 recruiting class.

All of these players are coming to the SWAC to shine and show what they can do. Plus with the No.1 recruit in the 2022 class Travis Hunter now in your conference at Jackson State, a lot of players are looking for that matchup.

This is the type of attention Deion has brought to HBCUs. Now schools are looking to defeat Primetime for bragging rights while JSU develops an everyone vs us mentality.
