Alabama State traveled to Tallahassee, Florida to take on the Rattlers of FAMU. The Rattlers looked to pick up their first win as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) versus Alabama State. This game turned into a 28-0 loss for ASU. This shutout was most puzzling. FAMU and the Hornets stat line were very similar too. The run game for the Rattlers seemed to be unstoppable as they scored three times on the ground and one 49-yd passing touchdown.

The Rattlers defense has been one of the best in the nation as they rank top 30 in 11 defensive categories: rushing defense (30th), total defense (26th), 1st down defense (18th), turnovers gained (18th), scoring defense (17th), 3rd down defense (13th), defensive TDs (13th), red zone defense (11th), 4th down defense (9th), and fumbles recovered (2nd). Florida A&M is also among the best in the nation when it comes to turnover margin as they rank 22nd and rank 18th in the nation for turnovers forced with eight through three games.

This posed a big challenge for the Hornets. They did not get 100 yards rushing or passing. Ryan Nettles completed three passes on 13 attempts for 17 yards. He didn’t show the same aggression that we saw the previous week. Next up was quarterback Joe Owens, a true freshman from Piedmont, South Carolina who stepped in and did pretty well completing seven passes on 12 attempts for 82 yards. He also had an interception by the FAMU defense returned 50 yards as the offense prevented a pick-six.

By looking at the stats you can see how the Rattlers were able to make more plays and capitalize. The Hornets had 31 rushing attempts compared to the Rattlers 33, but FAMU rushed for 141 yards while ASU only had 98. The passing game was not that much of a factor for both teams as ASU had 10 and FAMU had 11. The 49-yard touchdown pass contributed to the Rattlers 152 passing yards though and ASU only had 99 yards with no big plays.

It’s back to the drawing board for Alabama State as they prepare to take on University Arkansas Pine-Bluff for their homecoming game. Nettles and the offense look to fix some errors. A lot of work needs to be done starting with consistency. Consistent play from both sides of the ball is how you win games along with an aggressive playstyle.
