PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Boston College baseball team earned a doubleheader split by salvaging game three of its series with a 6-2 win over No. 16 Pittsburgh at Charles L. Cost Field on Saturday. The Eagles dropped game one of the day, 4-3, as their record moved to 20-25 overall and 9-21 in the ACC, while the Panthers went to 22-13 and 16-11 with the series win.

In game two, graduate right-hander Alex Stiegler (Dallas, Texas), who took the loss in game one, dominated out of the bullpen for 3.2-shutout innings. Stiegler (3-3) struck out seven and saw just two baserunners reach on a hit and a walk.

BC scored first in the nightcap and led 3-2 in the fifth when junior right-handed starter Joe Mancini (Fairfield, Conn.) was lifted. The Eagles pulled away with three runs in the seventh including a two-run, two-out single by graduate shortstop Brian Dempsey (Potomac, Md.).

Mancini, who made a one-batter appearance in relief on Friday, went four innings with two runs against on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Graduate left fielder Jack Cunningham (South Riding, Va.) homered in the win for Boston College.

Junior right-handed pitcher Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.) went six innings in the opener and stranded a pair to keep the game tied 2-2 through six. He struck out six and walked three while allowing two runs on six hits.

Pelio was briefly in line for the win as BC plated a run in the top of the seventh. Cunningham led off the seventh with a double and scored on a two-out single by junior catcher Peter Burns (Reading, Mass.).

Righty Matt Gilbertson (6-3) outlasted Pelio and went eight innings; staying in until Pitt pushed across two runs against the BC bullpen in the bottom of the eighth. He needed just 107 pitches to get through eight innings with 73 strikes. Gilbertson allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Third baseman Sky Duff went 3-for-4 out of the Panthers’ leadoff spot. He doubled in the game-winning run with two outs in the eighth. Second baseman David Yanni homered for the second game in a row.

Stiegler was used in relief of Pelio and tossed a 1-2-3 seventh before giving up the lead on two hits and a hit batter in the eighth. Stiegler (2-3) took the loss with two runs charged to him with two strikeouts.
