What we were hoping for is exactly what is taking place in the America East Conference. In Division A, the four teams are separated by three games from top to bottom. This weekend the division could get even tighter as Hartford (11-11) will host UMass Lowell (10-12) and Maine (8-9) will play Albany (11-11). In Division B, Stony Brook (16-4) has a commanding lead of six games on Binghamton (10-10). These two teams will meet this weekend. Binghamton does have a four-game lead for second place on both NJIT and UMBC. With sixteen games left in the regular season, there is still time for movement in both divisions so stay tuned. Here is some other news in America East Baseball.

The best starting pitcher in the league just might be Maine Black Bear junior right-hander Nicholas Sinacola. He leads the pitching race with a 6-1 record with a 1.29 ERA. This past Saturday in Lowell in front of several MLB scouts, Sinacola showed why the next level could very well be his next stop in his baseball journey. Despite losing 2-1 to the Riverhawks and suffering his first defeat of the year, Sinacola recorded ten strikeouts. That’s the seventh time this season that the righty has had a double-digit punch-out game. Sinacola leads in eight different pitching categories and has been named Pitcher of the Week three times.

Another pitcher that is making some noise in the league is Stony Brook’s, Sam Turcotte. He leads the league in innings pitched with 52, and is second in ERA at 1.88, batters struck out with 53, batters struck out looking with 18, wins with five, and lead in balks with two. In any other season, Turcotte would be the leading candidate for Pitcher of the Year honors. Instead, he will have to settle for being a part of the team with the best record in the league.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Seawolves have a player that is topping the charts. Evan Giordano is number one in runs scored with 30, hits with 42, and runs batted in at 32. He has been good on the basepaths as well, having stolen eight bases and been caught only twice. He is third in the batting race with a .382 average. Another reason why Stony Brook is at the moment the team to beat in the conference.

Despite beginning a part of a team that is in last place as the first of May nears, Maryland Baltimore County’s Ian Diaz is having a good year for himself at the plate. He is second in the batting race with a .385 average, He is third in both slugging percentage at .659, and on-base percentage at .462. His 35 hits place him fifth in that race. Diaz has been hit by pitch seven times already this year. He also has seven extra-base hits, five home runs, and two triples.

UMass Lowell’s Joey Castellanos has shown an ability to play around the infields for the Riverhawks this season. Because of that, he finds himself at the top of some defensive categories. He is second in putouts with 194, leads in fielding double plays with 15, and is second in total chances with 211. On the offensive side, he is tied for most runs scored in a game with four. That took place on March 20 vs UMBC.

That’s it for this week, so check back next week for more from America East Baseball.
