NORMAN, Okla. – The Texas Southern Tigers baseball team dropped their doubleheader series to Oklahoma on Wednesday.

Due to inclement weather prohibiting the teams from playing the first game of the junction yesterday, they scheduled to do it over with a doubleheader starting from 11 a.m. through the rest of the afternoon.

OKLAHOMA 6, TEXAS SOUTHERN 0

Texas Southern’s offense couldn’t produce anything from the batter’s box as they were shutout 6-0 by the Sooners’ staunch pitching for the day’s first half.

The visitors mustered just two hits in the contest, both of which respectively came from catcher Juan Sanchez and outfielder Justin Cooper in the second and third innings. Collectively, TSU reached base on five walks and a hit-by-pitch against Oklahoma’s bullpen.

Looking over to the other side of the ball, TSU’s pitching couldn’t stifle Oklahoma’s offense in the same way as their counterparts did to them. Starter Bryson Armstrong, a Norman native making his first TSU start in his home state, lasted until the end of the second inning having conceded three runs (two earned) on the heels of a Peyton Graham RBI triple, a Brandon Zaragoza base hit down the right-field line, and a Logan Kohler fielder’s choice reach play.

Armstrong was succeeded by a quintet of relievers featuring Caleb DuBois, Jesse Garcia, Jordan Martinez, Tyler Hansen, and A.J. Winger.

Fielding their bullpen, Texas Southern allowed three additional runs for the rest of the game.

OKLAHOMA 5, TEXAS SOUTHERN 1

The Tigers opened the return game in the lead as Cooper scored on a fielder’s choice groundout made by Oscar Ponce.

Their advantage was short-lived though since Oklahoma responded immediately thereafter in the bottom half of the same frame on an RBI double by Brett Squires.

Oklahoma tightened its grip on the game at 3-1 in the fourth thanks to Breydon Daniel’s triple and Brady Harlan’s sacrifice fly plays.

In the sixth, with Jaiden Beck on the mound for TSU’s starter Adolf Castillo, Oklahoma again grew their lead to 5-1 off Hudson Polk’s two-run home run to deep left.

Adolf Castillo threw his longest start as he went for five innings on four hits, three earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts against Oklahoma.

Compared to the first game, TSU doubled their hitting total to four which came from Cooper, Garza, Tyson Thompson, and Tyrese Clayborne.

The Tigers continue their road trip across the Midwest on April 16 when they will visit the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions for a three-game set. First pitch for the opening match will be thrown at 3 p.m.
