BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team earned a 5-3 win over Northeastern at Friedman Diamond on Tuesday afternoon. The win moved the Eagles to 14-13 on the season, while the Huskies fell to 10-6.
Junior right-hander Joe Mancini (Fairfield, Conn.) made his second start in as many weeks and got through the sixth inning for the first time since late in his freshman campaign. He allowed two runs on a pair of home runs to start the sixth inning, but finished the frame and stranded the potential tying run at second. Mancini (1-0) struck out four, walked just one, and gave up five hits.
BC staked Mancini to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore designated hitter Luke Gold (Ballston, N.Y.) led off with an infield single and he was brought home by a double off the bat of sophomore third baseman Vince Cimini (Scranton, Pa.). Following a walk and a double steal, Cimini scored on a RBI groundout.
The Eagles never trailed, but Northeastern twice cut the BC lead to one. In the sixth, the Huskies got home runs from second baseman Scott Holzwasser and right fielder Jared Dupere. Trailing 4-2, the Huskies got a run against the Eagle bullpen in the bottom of the eighth.
Each time NU got within a run, Boston College responded with a single run in the following frame. Freshman left fielder Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.) led off the seventh with a walk and the ninth with a triple; coming around to score on both occasions.
Freshman lefty Charlie Coon (Duxbury, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth to collect his first career save. He struck out three and left the potential game-tying runs on base.
