BRIGHTON, Mass. – No. 21 Boston College lost its series opener to No. 14 North Carolina, 9-3, at the Harrington Athletics Village on Friday. The Eagles dropped to 10-6 overall and 2-5 in the ACC, while the Tar Heels improved to 11-5 and 7-3.

UNC got to BC junior right-hander Mason Pelio (San Diego, Calif.) in the first with a three-run home run to left by shortstop Danny Serretti.

The Eagles left five runners on base in the first three innings with all five reaching with two outs. BC finally cracked through for a run in the fourth as freshman left fielder Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Tar Heels quickly put its lead back to three runs; taking advantage of three walks that loaded the bases in the fifth.

Carolina righty Austin Love (4-0) went seven innings and allowed just one unearned run on six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Pelio (2-3) was pulled after the fifth. He struck out six and was charged with four runs on three hits and four walks.

BC’s best chance to rally came in the bottom of the fifth as junior center fielder Sal Frelick (Lexington, Mass.) doubled and sophomore third baseman Luke Gold (Ballston, N.Y.) singled on the infield to put two runners on. Love retired the next two batters and stranded the two runners in scoring position after Gold stole second. The Tar Heels came out and immediately tacked on three runs against the Eagles’ bullpen.

Gold homered in the eighth to finish the day a perfect 4-for-4. Serretti paced the UNC lineup with a 2-for-5 game and five RBI.
