We all love the movies! I know that with Covid-19 it’s something I have been missing being able to go to the movies. I just love the smell of fresh popcorn covered in butter and getting my favorite beverage, a frozen coke, or coke icee. I came across an article about the top 30 sports movies of all time. After looking over the list I have seen many of them and some that I have not. It got me thinking that I would name my top five favorite sports movies of all time. Most of these will be from my generation since I grew up in the ’90s. Out of the five, there will be some that are on other people’s list and some that are not. Anyway, here are my top five. I will start with my favorite and move down to five.

The Sandlot

This movie, to me, shows that you should never judge anyone a book by its cover. This movie makes me laugh because of the different situations that the boys put themselves in. My favorite is when Smalls takes his stepfather’s signed Babe Ruth signed ball and plays with it. Especially when he knocks it over the fence where there is a dog named Hercules that eats stuff. What happens is they try everything to get the ball back before his stepfather gets back from his business trip. They do it after the leader of the group and the best baseball player of the group, Benny Rodriguez, jumps the fence and pickles the Beast. In the end, they have fun playing baseball and it talks about them all going off. In the end, Smalls is a radio broadcaster for the Los Angeles Dodgers which is who Benny Rodriguez plays for.

Miracle

This movie is about probably the greatest sports moment in USA history. If I had a time machine and I can go back in time to a sporting event that happened before I was born this would be one of the two. The movie is about the 1980 USA hockey team at that time in history when the USSR or Soviet Union, now Russia, dominated hockey in the Olympics. The US decided to hire Herb Brooks to try and dethrone the Soviets. He went to a tryout of the best American players and already had a list of who he wanted. Brooks took those players and put them through hell. In the end, they beat the Soviets 4-3. Two days later they beat Finland and won the gold medal. It was dawned by broadcaster Al Michael’s “Do You Believe in Miracles? Yes!”

Hoosiers

This movie was ranked number one overall during the ESPN era. The movie is about a small high school basketball team in Indiana. Norman Dale is hired after losing his cool as a coach. He then has his problems with nearly every player on the team. Sooner or later he gets the team to play as a team. It a great story on how the team who hated him, in the beginning, comes around to respect him. Dale takes his small team to the state finals and beats a team that is much bigger than his boys. This is probably my favorite basketball movie.

Caddyshack

I can relate to this movie. For 11 years I worked at a private country club with members. I know how members can be when it comes to tips. I was never a caddie like the main character was. Just like what he went through, there were members that loved me and others who hated the ground I walked on. This movie is cool on how someone different comes in and tries to have fun and the older members do not like it. It is funny how the end of the movie plays out and it is a much watch even if you hate the game of golf.

Friday Night Lights

This movie is great if you love high school football. The movie takes place in the state of Texas. In Texas, the game of football is a religion. There are people that when football season starts in August they are glued or go to in-person to all high school, college, and pro football games. In this movie, the players and head coach have on and off the field issues. They can overcome those issues and play for the state championship. They come up one yard short but are still a great story and movie.

Some movies did not make my top five that I love to watch. These five are ones, that if they are on TV, I will take my time to watch. Many will ask me why I love the Sandlot so much and it is so cool because most of us that grew up in the same era or before mine know what is the movie is all about. We would go out in the morning and not come back until the sun went down no computers or electronics. The other four are great too. I love hockey, basketball, football, but especially golf. What are your favorite sports movies?
