BC Duo First Eagles Since Chris Shaw Recognized by USA Baseball

CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball announced its 55-player preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list on Thursday, which included Boston College outfielder Sal Frelick (Lexington, Mass.) and third baseman Cody Morissette (Exeter, N.H.). The 43rd Golden Spikes Award will be presented in July to the top amateur baseball player in the country.

Since 2008, only one BC player has been on the watch list; Chris Shaw in 2015. The watch list is comprised of 55 players from 43 institutions. Boston College is in elite company as one of 11 schools with multiple candidates, including Arkansas, Florida, Louisville, Miami, Ole Miss, Tennessee, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Wake Forest.

In his abbreviated sophomore campaign, Morissette became the first two-time All-American in BC baseball history. He hit .448 with a 1.177 OPS in 15 games. Morissette collected his 100th hit in the final game of 2020, the 73rd of his career; making him the fastest to 100 career hits in program history. He is a career .346 hitter with 52 RBI, 26 doubles, and six home runs. In 2019, Morissette earned All-ACC Second Team, All-ACC Freshman Team, ACC All-Tournament Team, Collegiate Baseball News All-America Third Team, and Baseball America Freshman All-America.

Frelick earned All-ACC Second Team and Freshman All-America honors in 2019 despite missing the final month of the season due to injury. He hit .367 that season and is a .332 career hitter with 47 runs and 25 stolen bases in 54 games. Frelick hit just .241 last season but started the year on an 11-game hit streak with a .350 average before ending the season in a 0-for-18 slump over the final four games.

Fan voting will once again play a part in the Golden Spies Award in 2021. Amateur baseball fans will be able to vote for their favorite player on GOldenSpikesAward.com starting on June 8 with the naming of the Golden Spikes Award semifinalists.

The winner of the 43rd Golden Spikes Award will be named in July. To stay up-to-date on the 2021 Golden Spikes Award visit GoldenSpikesAward.com and follow @USAGoldenSpikes on Twitter and Instagram.
