Eagles Fall 85-80 in Overtime at Minnesota. Tabbs had a game-high 24

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. —  Wynston Tabbs had 24 points and Jay Heath 16 as the Boston College Eagles dropped an 85-80 overtime decision at Minnesota on Tuesday night. The game was part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The Eagles led by one, 31-30 at the break, and began the second half scoring the first six points, en route to a 19-7 run.  A 3-pointer from Heath with 14:04 left in regulation gave BC a 52-37 lead.  But Minnesota would respond with 16 unanswered over the next 4:24 to get back in the game.

A free throw from Tabbs gave BC a 60-56 lead with 6:22 to go.  There were five ties and five lead changes down the stretch.  Minnesota led 70-68 with 1:35 to go and had a chance to seal the game with two FT with 23 seconds to go, but Makai Ashton-Langford hit a floater in the lane with seven seconds to go, forcing the extra period.

In overtime, BC led after a James Karnik 3-pointer, but Minnesota’s presence at the foul line proved to be the difference, making 7-of-8 down the stretch.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Wynston Tabbs led all scorers with 24 points.  It is his second 20+ point performance of the season and the fourth of his career.
  • Jay Heath had 16 points to go with five boards, two assists, and two steals
  • Rich Kelly chipped in with 10 points off the bench – the fourth time in five games he has reached double digits
  • CJ Felder narrowly missed his first collegiate double-double, with nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
  • Makai Ashton-Langford posted six points, five boards, six assists, and two steals.  It is his highest assist total since Jan. 20, 2019, when he had seven dimes at Marquette.
  • James Karnik added seven points, seven rebounds, and a blocked shot in 24 minutes off the bench
  • Steffon Mitchell wasn’t able to get it going, seeing only 21 minutes due to foul trouble.  He had five points, two boards, and a blocked shot.
  • It was BC’s first overtime game of the season.
  • The Eagles connected on 30-of-71 shots from the floor (42.3%) and 12-of-35 from beyond the arc (34.3%).
  • They were 8-of-10 from the line.  The Gophers managed to get to the charity stripe 33 times, making 23.

STAT OF THE GAME:

  • 13:14 – Boston College did not hit a two-point field goal until the 7:46 mark of the first half when Makai Ashton-Langford had a steal and a score in transition.

FOR THE ANALYTICS CROWD:

  • Wynston Tabbs led BC with an efficiency rating of 19.
  • CJ Felder logged an 18 EFF rating, while Jay Heath (13) and James Karnik (12) also reached double figures.
  • Efficiency rating is calculated using the following formula: (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK – Missed Shots – TO)
