We all know that the year 2020 has been a year that has destroyed many people in many different ways. We have all seen many deaths of important people in the world of sports. Moving forward, there will be many changes. On the flip side, there have also been some positive stories that have happened in 2020. One of those happened just this past Saturday. For the first time in NCAA history, a young woman played in a college football game. It took place in Columbia, Missouri at Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field, home of Missouri Tigers. The Tigers are in the SEC, one of the power five conferences in college football. On this day they were hosting the Vanderbilt Commodores. The young woman that I was referring to is named Sarah Fuller. Fuller is the goaltender for the Lady Commodores soccer team that just won the SEC Championship.
Where history was made was during the second-half kickoff when Fuller kicked the ball. From what was seen her teammates supported her. To me, this was a great moment not only in sports but in life as well. This was a long time coming and I do not see any problem with it. There have been rumors that Carli Lloyd has been aiming for a try out for a kicker position in the NFL. The common aspect between the two is they are both soccer players. Lloyd has won many different trophies such as gold medals and world cup championships. Fuller could be one that we will be watching too, maybe the next big star for the USNWT. The back of her helmet had a sticker that said “Play Like a Girl”. That was to show that girls should have the opportunity to play football, especially at the kicker position.
Fuller’s family and boyfriend were in attendance to watch her make history. I did not get a chance to watch the game but I heard about it on my phone on the multiple sports apps that I have. That evening, I did see it on YouTube. I think that it was great to see especially in my favorite college football conference, the SEC. I am not saying that if it had happened at any other conference it would not have been great to see. Many people just do not care that she made history. They feel that it is no big deal. On the other hand, it is because it shows that the sports world is starting to become more acceptable. The ones that do not care will just say that they saw young women kick a ball in a football game.
I am not here to tell anyone how to feel about what Sarah Fuller did. In the end, I hope to see more of it in the college ranks and maybe see it in on the pro level. Fuller was supposed to kick this Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs but the game has been canceled for December 12th because of Covid-19. I am hoping to see it happened again and maybe she gets to kick a field goal, not just kick-off. Or if she does kickoff, let it be the one that opens the game. Maybe it will not just be this year but next year as well for Fuller and other young women!
