When the young man meets woman “Flamingo Kid” movie was being filmed in Hollywood in 1984, lead actress Janet Jones needed a bodyguard in much the same way actress Jacklyn Smith did when starring in the hit TV show series “Charlie’s Angels.”
So Jones, wife of hockey’s great player ever Wayne Gretzky, sought out the services of an experienced bodyguard with experience watching out for Hollywood actresses.
She chose DJ Darden Jenkins, the international man of mystery who bodyguarded for Jacklyn Smith. While filming the box office movie hit, DJenk hung out poolside and played gin rummy at the men’s club with lead actor Matt Dillon.

“No other DJ – and there are plenty of them – has been a bodyguard to Janet Jones and Jacklyn Smith,” said DJenk. “And no other bodyguard with the initials DJ did so who would become the mother of Paulina Gretzky, who would marry another DJ, world number one golfer DJ Dustin Johnson,” said DJenk.
“I enjoyed that run being the bodyguard for Janet while the movie was being shot,” said DJenk. “I was still in college at Wake Forest but I took several semesters off to run with the Hollywood crowd. They were thinking of having me play the part of Matt Dillon, but I was more interested in being Janet’s bodyguard.”
Wayne Gretzky read about all this today on the Sammy Sportface Baby Boomer Brotherhood Blog and asked Janet what it was like being bodyguarded by DJenk. She told him DJenk told her every day about his glory days as a high school soccer star, which she thought was alluring. She said she would have preferred that DJenk had been chosen to star in that movie instead of Dillon because she found him to be more of her type.
Dustin DJ Johnson’s wife Paulina also weighed in.
“I should have married DJenk instead of DJohn,” she said. “All DJohn does is play golf. DJenk posts comments every day on the Sammy Sportface blog which I find to be the sign of a man who is self-assured and knows what he wants out of life.”
DJohn felt slighted.
“Who is this DJenk cat?” he asked. “I’m the most famous DJ in the world and the best golfer on Earth. What’s with Paulina having a thing for this guy DJenk? I mean, I read the Sportface blog and track all of DJenk’s comments. But that doesn’t make him more intriguing than me. Sportface is a con man and so is DJenk.”
Sammy Sportface could not be reached for comment because he was watching re-runs of “The Flamingo Kid.”
