Lowell Spinners Clinches Number Two Seed With 4-2 Victory

NORWICH, CT – A loss meant they would play the waiting game, a win meant the locking up of the number two seed going into the 2019 New York-Penn League playoffs.

The Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox and 2019 Stedler Division Champions wound up with the latter, defeating the Connecticut Tigers, affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, by a final of 4-2 at Dodd Stadium in the regular-season finale Monday afternoon.

The Tigers (35-42) got on the board first, striking on an RBI single by Yoanda Rea in the bottom of the second inning – scoring Nick Quintana from second base and giving his guys a 1-0 lead early on.

The Spinners (42-35) however, were undeterred as they scored two runs in the following frame. Marino Campana sent the first two home on a two-run single that scored Cameron Cannon and Wil Dalton from second and third, respectively. Campana, himself, scored the third run of the inning – scoring on a sacrifice fly by Ceddanne Rafaela.

Dalton put the final nail on Connecticut’s coffin when he flared a single to right field, scoring Alex Erro – who was making his professional debut at first base in the game – from third base, to give Lowell a 4-1 lead.

Connecticut scored one in the bottom of the eighth inning, but that’s all they could muster against a strong performance by five Spinners pitchers.

Kelvin Sanchez was handed the ball to start the game for the Spinners and he went 4.0 innings, allowing a run on four hits with two walks, two strikeouts, and two pickoffs. He was, however, handed a no-decision in his first start since July 30 at Brooklyn.

Ryan Fernandez picked up the win – his fifth of the season – and Kris Jackson picked up the save, his ninth in Lowell (and second of the series) and 10th on the season.

The Spinners will be back in action on Wednesday with the first game of the New York Penn League Semi-Final Series. With the victory, they will either be traveling to Batavia or to West Virginia to take on the Muckdogs or the Black Bears.
