Decker’s Three Hits Lead Spinners To 5-4 Victory. Groshans gets Two RBI

Spinners

NORWICH, CT – Nick Decker’s three hits, Jaxx Groshans two RBIs in one official at-bat, and starter Ryan Zeferjahn pitched well and the Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox and 2019 Stedler Division Champions, were able to pull off a tight 5-4 victory over the Connecticut Tigers, affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, at Dodd Stadium Sunday night.

The Spinners (41-34) got on the board first in the top of the second inning when Antoni Flores singled home Decker, but the lead was short-lived as the Tigers (34-41) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half thanks to a double by Eliezer Alfonzo that scored Jake Holton and a single from Yoando Rea that scored Alfonzo.

After the third inning went scoreless, Lowell tied it up on a sacrifice fly by Groshans that scored Decker from third base – tying it up at 2-2. After Flores followed with a single to right field and moved up on a wild pitch, Nicholas Northcut followed with a strikeout. Alex Erro picked up his teammate and singled back up the middle – scoring Flores from second and giving the Spinners a 3-2 lead.

Lowell put the final scoring nail on Connecticut’s coffin when it tacked on two more – one on a single by Decker and another on Groshans’ second sacrifice fly of the game that scored Cameron Cannon from third base.

The real nail on the Tiger’s coffin came in the ninth inning when Dylan Spacke came in and shut the door with a shutout ninth inning and picking up his first professional save in the process.

Ryan Zeferjahn got the start for the Spinners and went 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He also struck out four and walked one. He was credited with a no-decision, however.

Jorge Rodriguez was the first out of the bullpen and was credited with the win – his first in the New York-Penn League. Rodriguez’s numbers just about mirrored Zeferjahn’s, except he went 4.2 innings. He too allowed two earned runs and struck out four. He did not walk anyone, however.

Lowell is back in action on Monday afternoon in the regular-season finale at Dodd Stadium when they take on Connecticut – first pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
