The Lowell Spinners (13-4) were back at Lelacheur Park on Tuesday night taking on the Vermont Lake Monsters (8-10) in the middle game of a three-game series. One of the better pitchers in the Penn League, Yusniel Padron-Artilles, was on the mound for the Spinners looking for his third win of the young season. Making his second start since being signed by the Oakland A’s was former North Carolina Tar Heel Tyler Baum, who got the ball for the Lake Monsters. The Spinners were winners of two in a row coming into play on Tuesday while Vermont was heading the other way, having lost three in a row. It was a tight game with the Spinners winning 1-0.
With the game at the halfway point, Padron-Artilles was throwing gas adding three more punch outs to his total. He mixed up his pitches nicely and had Vermont hitters guessing with every at-bat. But his offensive mates could not solve Vermont’s pitching. So as the game headed to the sixth, Lowell still had a 1-0 lead.
After six stellar innings from Padron-Artilles, manager Luke Montz went to his bullpen and brought on Robinson Leyer for the seventh. What should not be lost is how well Vermont’s pitching was. Richard Morban took over for Baum in the third and kept his team in the game by putting up zeroes. A pitching duel was taking place between the two staffs. Morban gave way to Jefferson Mejia in the eighth. Morban’s line was five innings, four hits, and no runs, to go with one walk and five strikeouts. It was exactly what the Lake Monsters were hoping for to stay in the game and give themselves a chance.
If Vermont was to do anything with it, it would have to be done against the third Spinners pitcher of the night. Brandon Nail came on in the eighth and stopped any thought of that happening. He finished his two innings of work with five punch outs and zero hits. The save was his third of the season in support of Padron-Artilles who picked up win number three on the year. Tyler Baum was your loser and is now 0-1.
When asked after the ballgame about his success so far this year, Padron-Artilles credited his pitching coach Nick Green and his manager with the trust they have in him. He said “he works hard” and has “learned how to throw strike one”. Both statements are important to any pitcher’s success. Third baseman Alex Erro, who got the game-winning hit back in the second inning said: “it’s a blast playing behind this pitching staff”. “They make it easy to play defense behind them”. Once again, Montz had high praise for his starter saying”he has lots of confidence and he sticks with his game plan”. He attacked the strike zone, something his manager really likes.
The Spinners go for the sweep of the Lakes Monsters on Wednesday night at 7 pm.
