SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS

Maine is 14-29 on the season and 10-10 in the America East. The Black Bears, who have the 18th toughest non-conference strength of schedule in the country, took one of three games at Hartford this past weekend. First baseman Joe Bramanti is Maine’s top hitter at .299 with 11 doubles and 28 RBI. Right fielder Hernen Sardinas has slugged nine home runs and 12 doubles while batting .282. DH Danny Casals has stolen 11 bases and hit .279 with a team-high 35 runs scored.

ALL-TIME VS. MAINE

The Black Bears lead the all-time series, 15-9. The Eagles have one each of the last three match-ups, averaging 10.0 runs per game, in the last four years.

LAST TIME THEY MET

BC scored twice in the bottom of the eighth before heavy rains came in and washed out the ninth inning; resulting in a 9-7 win for the Eagles in the 2018 home finale. Brian Dempsey went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Eagles’ lineup. Danny Casali homered and drove in three runs in a 3-for-4 performance for Maine.

RACE TOWARD THE RECORD BOOK

Senior RHP Thomas Lane became BC’s single-season record-holder for pitching appearances in a season at Virginia Tech (5/6) in his 33rd game; passing Nate Bayuk, who set the record of 32 in 2009. Freshman outfielder Sal Frelick is tied for the Eagles’ record in the ACC era for on-base percentage at .447 with Jake Palomaki (2015). Junior shortstop Brian Dempsey is one sacrifice-fly away from tying Ryan Leahy (2004) for the single-season record at seven. At VT (5/4), senior LHP Dan Metzdorfcracked the top-10 all-time at BC in innings pitched (ninth – 223.2) and strikeouts (10th – 180). He is 4.1 innings behind Jacob Stevens (2016-18) for eighth and one strikeout behind Mark Sullivan (1999-02) for ninth.
