BRIGHTON, Mass. – Mark Tumosa (Willington, Conn.) stole home to give the UMass Lowell baseball team a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning, but Boston College answered to squeak out a 6-5 victory on Tuesday night.
Trailing by one with two outs in the eighth, Ciaran Devenney (Malanapan, N.J.) earned a walk and advanced to third on Tumosa’s second single of the night. After a steal by the redshirt junior, Gallagher sent a dribble through the legs of the Eagles’ pitcher to score Devenney.
After a pitching change, Tumosa took advantage of Gallagher attracting the pitcher’s attention and stole home to put the visitors back in front. Tumosa led the way for the River Hawks (9-28) picking up two base hits and recording three steals.
“That was a really good, competitive hard-fought game both ways,” commented Head Coach Ken Harring. “I thought we did a lot of good things tonight, and we threw all freshmen on the mound. I thought our bats were competitive all night long and we’ll be ready to go tomorrow night against Harvard.”
The Eagles (20-22) plated two of their own in the bottom half with a two-out single and triple following a leadoff single.
Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) led off the contest with a single and stole his 13th base of the season before touching the plate on Cam Climo’s (Billerica, Mass.) sacrifice fly for the game’s first run.
The visitors extended the lead in the fourth following a leadoff walk and a hit and run from Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) that advanced Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) to third. After a Martin swipe of second a wild pitch plated Passatempo and Tumosa singled to open a 3-0 buffer.
Boston College loaded the based with no outs en route to a four-run fifth inning to take its first lead, 4-3.
The River Hawks host Harvard tomorrow evening at 5 p.m.
