Eagles set to begin ACC series vs. Wolfpack Friday at the Harrington Athletics Village

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College baseball hosts No. 1 North Carolina State for its second home, ACC series of the season. The weekend gets underway Friday, April 5 at 4 p.m. from the Harrington Athletics Village. The series continues Saturday at 2 and Sunday at 1 p.m.
About the Eagles…
Following a series win at No. 19 Florida State, Boston College suffered back-to-back losses to Massachusetts and Hartford to drop below .500 for the first time this season at 14-15 overall. The Eagles are 5-7 in the ACC with four wins against top-25 teams. Freshman outfielder Sal Frelickleads BC in hitting (.358), home runs (4), slugging percentage (.541), on-base percentage (.433) and stolen bases (15). Senior third baseman Jake Alu is hitting .351 while leading the Eagles’ lineup with 24 runs scored and nine doubles. Senior left-handed pitcher Dan Metzdorf opens the series on the mound for BC. He is 3-2 with a 3.56 earned run average and 27 strikeouts in 30.1 innings. Freshman right-hander Mason Peliorounds out the rotation as the Sunday starter. He is 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA, 31 strikeouts and .192 batting average against in 36.1 innings.
Scouting the Wolfpack…
NC State is No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball News Top-30 and a top-five team across all five major polls with a 27-3 record, including 10-2 in ACC action. The Wolfpack opened the season with a 19-0 record; the second to last unbeaten team in the country. NC State has slugged an ACC-leading 39 home runs; led by shortstop Will Wilson (9) and first baseman Evan Edwards (8). Wilson is hitting .352 with 13 doubles and 38 RBI, while Edwards is hitting .328 with 32 runs scored. Center fielder Tyler McDonough is the Wolfpack’s top hitter at .354. RHP Jason Parker gets the ball in game one on Friday. He is 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 34.2 innings.
All-Time vs. NC State…
Boston College is 15-25 all-time against North Carolina State, including a 15-23 mark in ACC regular season games. The two sides met for the first time in 2003; a 4-3 NC State win in Charleston, S.C. The Eagles and Wolfpack next matched up in BC’s first-ever ACC series; a sweep for No. 22 NC State in Raleigh. Boston College lost each of the first 10 match-ups in league play, but are since 15-13 since winning the 2009 series at home. The last time the Wolfpack visit Boston, the Eagles swept; starting the series with an 8-3 win at Fenway Park in the team’s annual ALS Awareness Game.
Last Time They Met…
In the first ACC series of 2018, Boston College salvaged the weekend with a Sunday win over No. 22 North Carolina State, 11-3. The Eagles put two runs on the board in the first and pulled away with seven in the third. Brian Rapp tossed seven-shutout innings of two-hit ball with eight strikeouts. Four players recorded multi-hit games with Scott Braren leading the way at 3-for-5 with two RBI.
By the Numbers: The Eagles vs. The Pack…
Jake Alu: .385 (10-for-26) with three multi-hit games… Brian Dempsey: .261 (6-for-23)… Chris Galland: .364 (4-for-11) in last year’s series with three stolen bases and two triples… Dan Metzdorf: 4.50 ERA across 12 innings in two starts and two relief appearances, eight innings of one-run, three-hit ball to earn a win in 2017.
Against the Ranked…
The Eagles are 4-5 against ranked opponents this season having defeated No. 8 Louisville (3/10), No. 20 Clemson (3/24) and No. 19 Florida State (3/29, 3/31). The win over the Cardinals marked BC’s first win over a ranked team and first over a ranked team on the road since defeating No. 21 Virginia (3/16/18). The series win at FSU marked the first for the Eagles against a ranked opponent at home or on the road since taking two of three at No. 22 Georgia Tech (2016). Boston College picked up two wins vs. ranked teams in each of the last three seasons and went 10-9 vs. the ranked in 2016.
Year-to-Year Comparison…
Boston College is four games improved through 29 games than its 10-19 record to start 2018. The Eagles’ scoring is up 0.9 run per game by comparison from 5.2 to 5.9. Home runs are up from 0.29 (overall in 2018) to 0.63 this season. Jack Cunningham hit his team-leading fourth home run at Wake Forest (3/15). Cunningham’s fourth of the year was the 14th of the season by BC. The Eagles’ 14th home run of 2018 came in game 41.
Speeding Eagles…
The Eagles lead the ACC with 61 stolen bases, which ranks 11th in the country. Sal Frelick is second in the ACC with 15 and Chris Galland ranks fourth with 12. As a team, Boston College swiped 92 bags in 2018. The Eagles ranked second in the ACC behind Louisville and 21st in the nation. BC averaged 1.88 per game; good enough for second in the league and 12th in the NCAA. Three Eagles tallied 19 stolen bases or more as Galland led the way with 28. He ranked 20th in the nation and 2nd in the ACC in overall steals and 12th in the country and first in the league with 0.58 per game.
