Bonnies Improve and Look To Win Five More To Reach Goal Of 209 For Schmidt
Nobody ever thought Saint Bonaventure would recover from a tragic scandal involving the basketball program and the school in 2007, let alone have the winningest coach in school history come to the forefront. In the last 12 seasons of hoops action, that has all happened for the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies. They found the hidden gem in the now 12-year veteran to the program, Mark Schmidt. He added another one in a battle with La Salle winning 62-60 at home last night.
Now, remember the number 203, that is the number that Schmidt has had in the back of his mind for at least a year now. That is the magic number, the one that forced Larry Weise to hand the title of greatest Bonaventure coach off, How did we get here?
The Bonnies beat the UCLA in the NCAA first four round in the 2018 tournament at Dayton Arena, then came win 200, then win 202 against the Hawks. Win 203 would be no easy task of course, but, to think it would come against a very tough George Mason squad is unbelievable. Kyle Lofton was the hero in that one and he followed that performance with another dose of heroism inside Reilly center on Wednesday.
In that battle, Lofton led the pack with 18 points on the board for the squad. In 40 minutes of action, he went 1-4 from long range. Freshman Osun Ossunniyi continued to impress pulling out 13 boards and, four blocks. The Bonnies saw an impressive effort from Courtney Stockard as he lent a hand seven times in 40 minutes. The Senior also added 16 to the books for the Bonnies. As for the rest, Dominick Welch chipped in six, Ladarien Griffin with seven, and, Osunniyi had nine.
The brown and white still are not .500 on the year, however, they are on track to be close. They have to pass a road test with Fordham.
