CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team completed its second scrimmage of training camp Saturday morning inside Alumni Stadium. The defense set the tone early as the Eagles totaled four interceptions on the day.

Here are Saturday’s notes and observations:

Quarterback Anthony Brown took his first live snaps of the preseason this past week and was back under center to start in Saturday morning’s scrimmage. The game started with a 25-yard KO return by Michael Walker. The drive ended as Connor Strachan’s interception marked the first turnover of the morning. Grant Carlson dropped a punt inside the five that was downed at the one by Taj-Amir Torres as the defense grabbed the early momentum.

A long Brown completion to Jake Burt got the offense down to the nine and David Bailey punched it in from the one … AJ Dillon was held back and did not play in Saturday’s scrimmage … Brown and Jon Baker played in the first half only.

In third-team reps, Matt Valecce tucked it and ran up the middle to the end zone for a 47-yard score … Jahmin Muse intercepted a pass and raced down the far sideline for a pick-six.

Running the first team in a two-minute drill, Matt McDonald got the offense across midfield on two completions to Chris Garrison … Lukas Denis slowed the drive by charging in and knocking down a pass in the backfield… Torres ended the drive with an interception.

EJ Perry led the second team offense on a drive that began at its own 30 and moved the ball with two big completions to Ray Marten and CJ Lewis … on third-and-three from the six, Perry hit Christian McStravick for the score.

Noah Jordan-Williams caught a pass from Perry on a shallow route, turned and went the distance for a 76-yard TD … Travis Levy followed with the longest run of the day to open the next series; a 46-yard gain … Colton Lichtenberg finished the drive with a 42-yard field goal.

Former Outland Trophy winner Mike Ruth was at Saturday’s scrimmage along with Boston College head men’s basketball coach Jim Christian … Mike Palmer and Brandon Sebastian each also had an interception Saturday … Davon Jones earned reps both at running back and linebacker for the Eagles. The junior looked comfortable at running back after earning limited reps at the position this week during training camp … the Eagles ran an estimated 75-80 plays Saturday.

Head Coach Steve Addazio Quotes
On his overall assessment of the scrimmage:
“We’re going to have to watch everything and address it. We looked slow. We’ve looked fast all camp. Explosive and fast; both sides of the ball. We looked slow and lethargic today. That’s my overall assessment and I think there was a lack of continuity because there’s just too many people coming in and out. That’s my responsibility.”

On Brown getting back in at quarterback:
“We got Anthony some reps today. He needs to get back into the flow. He has had a helluva week this week; really good. This is all part of that. For him, it’s cumulative. We were having a lot of conversations about how many reps we wanted him to take today and he didn’t take very many.

On improved discipline and reducing penalties:
“I saw on Tuesday and Thursday. We brought it back down to where we were a year ago. We were number two in the country and averaged four penalties per game. On Tuesday and Thursday, based on ratios, that’s what we did. The very first scrimmage it was really high. On Tuesday and Thursday, we whacked [that number] down. I was really excited. Today, we bounced back up. With the ones today, we increased our penalties to what would have been if it was a real game we would have had seven and that’s three too many. We’re going to come back and have a day like this in a game.”

On Jones playing both sides of the ball:
“Davon is doing a great job. He’s playing both sides for us a little bit. We’re trying to invest some time into him in case we have any issues or to increase our depth, while we’re waiting for these young guys to develop. He’s a powerful back. He’s playing on defense and don’t be surprised to see him game one having the ability to have 10 plays on offense.”
