BC Baseball: Nelson’s Six-Inning Start Can’t Push BC to Win;

Galland ties for second in BC record books with 26th stolen base

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Rhode Island on Tuesday afternoon at the Harrington Athletics Village at Brighton Fields. The Eagles (12-23) logged just two hits against the Ram (11-25).

Junior right-hander Jack Nelson struck out five in a career-high, six-inning start. He did not allow a run, gave up four hits and just two walks. Classmate RHP Thomas Lane threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one infield hit and tying a career high with four Ks.

Freshman Chris Galland stole his ACC-leading 26th base of the season, which ties for second in BC record books. Junior Gian Martellini and sophomore Jack Cunningham recorded the only BC hits of the game.

  • The Rams scored three runs off redshirt freshman LHP Joey Walsh to take a lead in the seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Eagles go on the board with two down in the first, as Martellini doubled to right center and Cunningham drove him in with a single through the right side.
  • The Rams broke through in the seventh with Walsh on the mound. Xavier Vargas led off with a triple to right center and Matt Daller walked to put runners on the corners. Mike Foley hit a sac fly to deep center to tie the game. Daller moved up and scored on a single through the left side by Laurence Hill. Walsh got a strikeout looking for the second out before Lane entered the game. With Hill on second, Jordan Powell knocked one to the hole between first and second. Senior first baseman, Mitch Bigras, knocked it down, but Hill was able to score before Bigras could fire it home.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • BC is now 17-14 all-time against URI, but the loss snapped a five-game win streak against the Rams.
  • Junior Jake Alu‘s 11-game on-base streak ended.
  • Walsh registered the first loss in his career.
  • Galland was caught stealing for the first time in his career in the sixth.
  • The Eagles did not commit an error for the 16th time this season.
