BC BASEBALL: Goodreau’s Four RBI Propel BC Past UMass
The Eagles place third in the 2018 Beanpot Tournament
Box Score (PDF)BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team earned a third-place finish in the 2018 Beanpot Tournament with a 9-2 victory over Massachusetts on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles (11-19) picked up their seventh straight victory over the Minutemen (9-13).
Sophomore Jake Goodreau recorded a career-high four RBIs while junior right-hander John Witkowski collected his first save of the save of the season, pitching four shutout innings with a career-high five strikeouts.
Freshman Chris Galland stole his ACC-leading 20th base of the season, third on BC’s single-season list.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Jake Goodreau had a career day with four RBIs and two hits in his third career start behind the plate. He is riding a career-long, three-game hit streak.
- Junior RHP Jack Nelson recorded his first win of the season with a five-inning start. He allowed six hits, two runs, five walks and struck out three.
- Junior RHP John Witkowski recorded a career-high five strikeouts in his first save of the season. He threw four scoreless innings, allowing three hits without a walk.
- Freshman Chris Galland stole his ACC-leading 20th base of the season. He is perfect on the base path and moves into sole possession of third place in BC’s single-season record book.
- Junior Gian Martellini drew two walks, extending his on-base streak to 17 games, which ties the longest of the season for a BC player.
- Sophomore Jack Cunningham drove in three on a 2-for-4 afternoon with a bases-clearing double in the sixth.
- Sophomore Brian Dempsey was 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk. He has now reached base safely in the 26 of the 29 games this season and has at least one hit in 22 of the last 30 games

- Leading by two, the Eagles scored five runs in the sixth to take a commanding lead.
- Witkowski threw four scoreless to hold the Minutemen at bay.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles struck first, scoring two in the second. Redshirt junior Scott Braren and Galland started the inning with back-to-back singles and Dempsey moved them over with a sac bunt. With two down, Goodreau laced one back at UMass pitcher Ben Shields and he beat the throw over to first, allowing both runners to score.
- BC added two more in the fourth. Dempsey singled up the middle and junior Jake Alu followed with a walk. Goodreau knocked one to UMass first baseman Cooper Mrowka, whose throw to second skipped away, allowing Dempsey to score and Alu to reach third. Senior Jake Palomaki plated Alu with a laser back to the mound.
- UMass cut the lead to two in the fifth. With two down and a runner on first, Eddy Hart doubled to center to plate the Minutemen’s first run of the game. Connor Smith followed with an RBI single to cut it to a 4-2 BC lead. UMass loaded the bases on another hit and a walk, but Nelson forced a popup to get out of the jam.
- The Eagles scored five in the sixth to take a commanding, 9-2 lead. BC loaded the bases on an error, walk and bunt single. Goodreau plated two with a base hit to right. The Eagles reloaded the bases as Palomaki and sophomore Dante Baldelli drew walks and Cunningham knocked a double to deep right center to clear the bases.

- The Eagles gained the all-time series advantage, 20-19, and has won the last seven meetings.
- BC did not record an error for the 14th time this season.
- Senior Jake Palomaki recorded two walks in the game. He has reached base in 27 of the 30 games this season
