Belichick, Brady Feud Over Their Relative Greatness

The scene is the office of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. While the coach sits behind his desk, his star quarterback, Tom Brady, sits on the other side of the desk.

They’re staring at each other. The atmosphere is tense. There is ill will in both of their hearts. Both men are thinking similar thoughts but from biased perspectives. Belichick is thinking that he is the greatest football mind of all time and is the central reason why the team has won five Super Bowls and will take a sixth in two weeks at this year’s Super Bowl.

Brady is thinking to himself that he is the main reason for the team’s success and he is the greatest football mind – and player – of all time.

It’s quiet but you can see smoke billowing out the top of both of their heads. There are fires burning inside their minds. Their egos are aflame.

Brady breaks the silence:

“I’m the greatest football genius ever because I not only have to understand the game the way you as a coach do, but I also have to go out and execute the strategy. I actually play the game. All you do is think about it and coach it. You’re only half the football savant that I am.”

Belichick responds:

“Don’t give me that crap, Tom. I’m the mastermind of this operation. Without my intellectual acumen, none of these Super Bowls would have happened. I have the wisdom, foresight, and courage to cut really good players in the prime of their careers so I don’t have to pay them the money they will want. This disloyalty I have repeatedly shown my
players who have given their souls to me to win Super Bowls is a key differentiator. It’s a tough job and I’m brash enough to do it time and time again. All you do is throw a football around.”

Brady sits up in his chair and says:

“Without me, you would never have won any Super Bowls. You didn’t succeed as coach of the Browns because I wasn’t on your team. You didn’t succeed with Drew Bledsoe as your quarterback because you didn’t have the insight to know that I should be your quarterback. It took an injury to Bledsoe for you to put me in the starting line-up. Then what happened? I carried you to Super Bowl titles. You’re just a coach. You never played one down of NFL football. In fact, you weren’t even a Division 1 college player like I was at Michigan. You played at Division 3 Wesleyan University. Whoever heard of anything about that school’s football program?

Belichick shot back:

“You’re the most stuck up pretty boy I have met. All you care about is dating supermodels and making everybody think you’re a great quarterback. I beg to differ. You’re a guy who got lucky to play for the smartest football coach who has ever lived. You know nothing about how to lead men into battle. You don’t know to devise defensive schemes. All you how to do is throw a silly football around. That’s the easy part of the game, Tommy Pretty Boy. There is no honor in that. You are no great leader of men. I am. Everybody thinks you’re a great leader but you’re not. I’m the great leader of this organization and you are just one of my puppets. Let it be known from this moment
forward that I am the greatest football mind ever and have made more great contributions to the game than anyone. Yes, I am the main reason why the New England Patriots are great. You’re just a player. You’re a
pawn in my grand scheme.”

A thicker plume of smoke billowed out of the top of Tom’s head. In the room, you could smell the testosterone levels intensifying. This subject has reached an impasse. Both men were convinced of their individual greatness and superiority over the other. No agreements would be reached.

“Get out of my office you Super Model Pretty Boy,” said the coach. “Go home and toss that silly football around your living room. That’s what you’re good at, throwing a ball. Think about how insignificant a talent that is in the grand scheme of football.”

As he walked out of the office, Brady said: “Think about insignificant a talent it is to write up half-time adjustments on a whiteboard. That’s not football. That’s classroom scribbling. The game of football is about the players. They make things happen. Coaches stand on the sideline. They’re spectators, player wannabees. In your case, you’re a
Tom Brady wannabee. You wanna be me because I’m the greatest football player ever and am married to a supermodel.”
