Jones’ Arm, Legs Lead Blue Devils to Bowl Win
(DETROIT, MI) Detroit has been known to showcase talent in all ways including sports. Very familiar names have played in Detroit.
Daniel Jones may have added himself to that list – in a big way!
The 6-5, 215-pound redshirt sophomore from Charlotte put on a show in Motown as he ran, threw, and led his Duke Blue Devils past the Northern Illinois Huskies Tuesday night 36-14 in the Fourth Annual Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field.
Jones finished 27 of 40 for 252 yards and two touchdowns in the air and added 86 yards and 16 carries on the ground to lead the Duke offensive attack to the tune of 486 total yards on the evening.
Jones got the scoring started converting a fourth-and-goal crashing in from a yard out completing a 58-yard drive in 10 plays using 3:35 off the clock to stake the Blue Devils to a 7-0 lead. Within that drive, Jones connected with Daniel Helm for 12 yards and Davis Koppenhaver for 20 yards. The latter set up Duke with a first-and-goal at the Huskies nine-yard line.
NIU tried to get back in the game with a trick play on fourth down in their own territory but Matt Ference’s pass sailed incomplete intended for Trayshon Foster. That gave the Devils the ball at the Husky 11.
Jones and the Devils pounced again going the distance in three plays with Shaun Wilson paying off the drive with a one-yard plunge giving Duke a 14-0 lead.
The Huskies fought back in the second period with a quick drive of their own. Marcus Childers hit Spencer Tears with a 43-yard connection and Tre Harbison paid off the drive with a 25-yard touchdown run cutting the lead to 14-7.
After forcing a three-and-out, Northern Illinois struck again as Childers his Jauan Wesley for a 67-yard bomb and a 14-14 tie.
It was all Duke and Daniel Jones after that.

Jones engineered an eight-play, 80-yard march beginning with a 17-yard connection to Daniel Helm, mixing in a 12-yard run, and completing the drive with a 33-yard touchdown reception by T.J. Rahming. The extra point was missed, but the Devils had the lead.
Duke added another score before intermission as Jones hit Shaun Wilson for an 11-yard touchdown with 1:33 left in the first half and a 26-14 lead.
The Blue Devils wanted more and got more after stopping Northern Illinois on the first drive of the 3rd Quarter. Brittain Brown paid off a 67-yard, 11-play drive with a seven-yard touchdown run to make the score 33-14.

But the night belonged to Daniel Jones as his dual-threat weaponry was on full display. 338 yards of the 486-yard total for Duke belonged to the redshirt sophomore from Charlotte Latin.
Not a bad performance on a stage known as Motown.
