Fishing to Understand the Greatness of Mike Trout
What’s up with you, Mike Trout? Are you better than Mickey Mantle? So far in your career, you’ve proven you have his kind of talent – and maybe more.
We never thought we would see another player with the speed, hitting prowess and power, and adept fielding ability that Mantle exhibited. But you have proved us wrong.
Already in your young career, you have won two MVP Awards. You are hot again this season and are making a bid for a third even after being out several weeks with an injury.
Where did you get all your talent? How are you playing baseball at such a high-level season after season – and at such a young age? It’s obvious you were born with hand-eye coordination that is so sharp that almost no one else in the world who tries to hit a baseball can match it. You are a baseball genius like Larry Bird was in basketball and Wayne Gretzky in hockey.
When you wake up in the morning, do you think about the fact that you are well on your way to becoming a Hall of Fame baseball player? Do you ponder the fact that you are consistently the best baseball player in the world, with all due respect to Bryce Harper? Do you understand that the numbers you’ve been putting up in your first few years in the league are stunningly great?
Kids around the world dream of becoming big league players one day. Few of them even try to picture themselves being the best among the big leaguers. That is too hard to imagine because there are so many great baseball players in the major leagues.
But you are living that reality being the best of the best. What’s it like being so talented?
I imagine you practice plenty just like you should and so many of your teammates and competitors do. But at some point, the time to practice runs out. There are only so many swings of the bat in the cage that any baseball player can do. At some point, all the practice has to stop. Games need to be played. Time runs out.
And that’s when raw talent rises to the surface. And this is where you excel. When it comes time to demonstrate baseball talents, you are better than all the rest. Like Michael Jordan who was born to play basketball and looked the part in every way, you are at ease and perfectly suited to play baseball at a high level. At all phases of the game – hitting, hitting for power, hitting for average, stealing bases, base running, fielding – you are just plain great and we know this will continue for several more years.
