Spinners make it three in a row 4-0 over Tri-City

Good pitching always takes care of good hitting. Last night at LeLacheur Park, three Lowell Spinners pitchers Jake Thompson, Dakota Smith, Dominic LoBrutto combined on a five-hit shutout. It was the team’s fourth such of the season. The Spinners began a six-game home stand with a 4-0 win over the Valleycats.

Thompson got things started on the mound for the home team. As was the case with his last start, he threw only one inning, but unlike his last appearance he gave up only one hit, no runs, striking out two while throwing 17 pitches.

Dakota Smith was next up and he was excellent. In six innings of work, he gave up three hits while striking out three and would issue only one walk.

The Spinners offense was in two frames, the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, three straight hits produced two runs to give them a lead they would never give up. Raiwinson Lameda got it started with an infield hit. The next hitter, Michael Campana, would triple to the gap in left center scoring Lameda. 1-0 Lowell. The next batter, Yoan Aybar, drove home Campana with a base hit to right, 2-0 Spinners after four.

In the fifth, they would double their lead as two hits and help from a Valleycats defense that made two errors allowed Lowell to take a 4-0 lead to the latter stages of the game.

Thompson and Smith did their job on the mound. So did the new closer of the team LoBrutto, while not a save opportunity, he would face only three Tri-City hitters in the ninth and retire them all. The Spinners are now within two games of the .500 mark at 22-24.

Smith gets the win and improves his record to 3-2. Kit Scheetz, who went the first 4.1 innings giving up five hits and four runs. Three of them were earned and he took the loss and is now 0-3.

The two teams are right back at it on Wednesday night starting at 6:35 pm.

Before the game, the team announced that three members of the ball club will be heading to Tri-City for the NYPL All-Star Game. They are infielder Garrett Benge, outfielder Yoan Aybar, and pitcher Denyi Revers.
