Memphis 41, East Carolina 34 (Overtime)
Memphis opened the conference weekend with one of its most important victories of the season. However, the Tigers needed a remarkable comeback to defeat East Carolina on Thursday night. The Pirates controlled much of the early action and eventually built a 24-10 advantage. Memphis responded with an offensive surge that changed the game’s direction. Quarterback Marcus Stokes delivered an outstanding performance. He completed 29 of 43 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns. Additionally, Stokes rushed for 31 yards and two touchdowns. His five total scores helped Memphis overcome its early struggles. Wide receiver Jemyri Davis contributed seven receptions for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
East Carolina refused to disappear. Receiver Landon Sides caught seven passes for 130 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, kicker Noah Perez connected on four field goals, including attempts from 49 and 40 yards. Memphis eventually forced overtime and secured the 41-34 victory. The Tigers improved to 6-2 and earned bowl eligibility for the 13th consecutive season. More importantly, Memphis remained firmly involved in the American Conference championship discussion.
Army 38, Tulsa 35
Army and Tulsa produced another memorable Friday night contest. The Black Knights entered the final minutes facing a seven-point deficit. Tulsa held a 35-28 advantage at the two-minute timeout. However, Army refused to surrender. The Black Knights scored 10 unanswered points to complete their comeback. Kicker Dawson Jones provided the defining moment. Jones drilled a 50-yard field goal as time expired, giving Army a dramatic 38-35 victory. His performance carried additional historical significance.
Jones connected on three field goals, including kicks from 50, 34, and 51 yards. He became the first Army kicker to make two field goals of at least 50 yards in one game. Meanwhile, Tulsa linebacker Chris Thompson Jr. delivered an impressive defensive performance despite the loss. Thompson recorded 15 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one sack. Unfortunately for Tulsa, those defensive contributions could not prevent Army’s late comeback. The victory strengthened Army’s conference position and demonstrated the Black Knights’ ability to handle pressure. Army improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Florida Atlantic 51, Rice 49
Florida Atlantic and Rice delivered the highest-scoring American Conference game of the weekend. The two programs combined for 100 points in an offensive showcase that featured outstanding individual performances. Florida Atlantic quarterback Caden Veltkamp led the Owls’ explosive attack. Veltkamp completed 29 of 37 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns. He also contributed a rushing touchdown. Meanwhile, wide receiver Easton Messer created problems for the Rice secondary throughout the contest. Messer finished with 12 receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to create separation helped Florida Atlantic sustain its offensive momentum.
However, Rice quarterback Gael Ochoa nearly stole the spotlight. Ochoa rushed for an incredible 259 yards and four touchdowns on just 12 carries. That production represented an average of 21.6 yards per rushing attempt. Additionally, Ochoa threw for 80 yards and another touchdown. Despite his spectacular performance, Rice could not overcome Florida Atlantic’s offensive production. The Owls escaped with a 51-49 victory and improved to 5-2 overall. Florida Atlantic also improved to 2-1 in conference play. The victory marked the second time in three games that Florida Atlantic scored at least 50 points. However, the defense must improve if the Owls hope to challenge the conference’s top contenders.
North Texas 49, Navy 39
North Texas continued its impressive conference start with a 49-39 victory over Navy in Annapolis. The Mean Green entered the contest riding considerable momentum. Their offensive stars delivered another outstanding performance. Quarterback Tayven Jackson threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, running back Jahiem White rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. White also caught four passes for 58 yards. Receiver Justin Stevenson produced another impressive performance with eight receptions for 209 yards and two touchdowns. However, North Texas received significant contributions beyond its offense.
Dalton Carnes scored on a spectacular 76-yard trick-play punt return. Additionally, Zakye Barker returned a fumble 63 yards for another touchdown. Those defensive and special teams scores helped North Texas withstand Navy’s explosive rushing attack. Navy quarterback Jackson Gutierrez delivered one of the weekend’s most impressive individual performances. Gutierrez rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. He also completed eight of 11 passes for 156 yards and another touchdown. Navy accumulated 529 yards of total offense, including 363 rushing yards. However, North Texas answered when Navy reduced the deficit to three points during the fourth quarter. White broke free for a 59-yard touchdown run, restoring breathing room for the Mean Green. North Texas eventually secured its fourth consecutive victory. The Mean Green improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, Navy dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
UTSA 42, Tulane 19
UTSA delivered perhaps the weekend’s most convincing performance with a dominant road victory over Tulane. The Roadrunners entered the contest looking to protect their unbeaten conference record. They accomplished that goal behind a physical rushing attack and an opportunistic defense. UTSA forced six turnovers, including four fumbles and two interceptions. Those takeaways repeatedly disrupted Tulane’s offense and provided valuable opportunities for the Roadrunners. Meanwhile, UTSA rushed for 223 yards. Running back Will Henderson III led the rushing attack with 102 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. However, linebacker Owen Pewee delivered one of the conference’s strongest defensive performances.
Pewee recorded five solo tackles, three sacks, and one pass breakup. His relentless pressure helped UTSA control the game and prevent Tulane from establishing consistent offensive rhythm. The Roadrunners eventually cruised to a 42-19 victory. UTSA improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in American Conference play. The seven-win start represents the program’s best opening since its undefeated 11-game start in 2021. Meanwhile, Tulane fell to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in conference action. UTSA continues building a compelling case as one of the American Conference’s strongest championship contenders.
