Allen's Superhuman Start, Second-Half Defensive Collapse as Bills Hold On

Josh Allen continues to play at an otherworldly level, but the Buffalo Bills are walking a dangerous high-wire act. Buffalo secured a 41-31 victory over the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football, yet what should have been a comfortable, wire-to-wire statement win turned into an anxious four-quarter dogfight due to a recurring second-half defensive collapse.

Allen was sensational once again, completing 20 of 31 passes for three touchdowns while adding to his staggering early-season total. In just two games of the 2026 campaign, the superstar quarterback has thrown five touchdowns and rushed for four. Every time Buffalo needed a spark, Allen answered, tearing apart Detroit’s secondary and extending drives with his legs to keep the offense in total rhythm early.

For the first two quarters, the Bills looked uncontainable. Buffalo stormed out of the gates and built a commanding 27–10 halftime lead, seemingly putting the game out of reach before the bands even took the field.

However, the second half exposed the exact red flags that continue to plague defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard’s unit. The Bills’ defense let down dramatically after the break, allowing Jared Goff and the Lions to march down the field almost at will. Detroit racked up three second-half touchdowns, exploiting soft coverage, missed tackles, and costly penalties to turn a blowout into a tight contest late in the fourth quarter.

While Allen’s brilliance was ultimately enough to slam the door and preserve the 41-31 victory, allowing 21 second-half points made this game far closer than it ever should have been. If Buffalo has true championship ambitions, they can’t keep relying solely on Allen’s multi-touchdown heroics to bail out a defense that surrenders control the moment it builds a lead.
