Front Office Sports reported that Russini is “absolutely” planning a sports media comeback. Sources told the outlet she has discussed multiple potential jobs. Those opportunities range from NFL insider roles to opinion and personality positions. The news comes after a turbulent five months for the veteran reporter. Russini resigned from The Athletic in April. Her departure followed controversy surrounding New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Now, the 2026 NFL season has arrived. Russini appears closer to choosing her next destination.
The Athletic Investigation
The latest major development came September 3. The Athletic released the findings of its internal investigation into Russini’s work. The review focused on her relationship with Vrabel and its potential impact. Mike Semel, The Athletic editorial director for standards and quality, led the investigation. Semel reviewed 903 stories, 77 videos and 204 episodes of the Scoop City podcast. He also reviewed Russini’s outside appearances and interviewed Athletic employees. The investigation reached an important conclusion. Russini’s relationship with Vrabel violated The Athletics’ standards.
The organization said she should have disclosed the relationship to her editors. However, the investigation did not establish that her reporting showed clear bias toward Vrabel. Only about five percent of the reviewed stories mentioned Vrabel or his teams. Most of those stories focused on news and transactions. The review found no inaccuracies in the stories involving Vrabel or his teams. It also found no clear evidence that Russini used her platform to benefit him. Still, Semel acknowledged that some of her coverage appeared overly favorable. He described certain passages as uncomfortable in hindsight.
Russini Stands by Her Work
Russini has maintained that her journalism deserves to stand on its own. Following the investigation, she issued a brief response. She said she stands by all of her reporting throughout her career. She previously made a similar argument when she resigned. Russini said she covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication. She also said she stood behind every story she had published.
