The team unveiled a commemorative jersey on Wednesday, September 9. The design celebrates 250 years since America declared independence. It also connects the Capitals with the nation’s military history. The jersey carries plenty of meaning beyond its patriotic color scheme. Two U.S. military veterans helped design the special uniform. United States Air Force veteran Patrick J. Sargent joined U.S. Navy veteran Fidel GomezTorres on the project. Their military experiences helped shape the jersey’s overall visual identity. The design focuses heavily on service, civic responsibility, and American history.
The Capitals also wanted the jersey to represent the connection between Washington and the country. After all, the team plays in the nation’s capital. That makes the anniversary celebration especially fitting for the franchise. The jersey uses a dress blues-inspired color palette. Navy, red, white, and gold dominate the design. Those colors create a look that feels different from a standard Capitals uniform. However, the details make the jersey even more interesting.
The front features an updated version of the Capitals’ Weagle logo. The design adds American elements inspired by Revolutionary-era printmaking. That approach gives the jersey a historic appearance. The shoulder patches carry even more meaning. One patch features the Washington Monument alongside the words “We the People.” That phrase connects the jersey to America’s founding documents. The opposite shoulder patch features the Torch of Liberty. The jersey also displays the years 1776 and 2026. Those dates mark the 250-year anniversary celebration. Six stars appear on the jersey’s shoulders and crest.
Each star represents one branch of the United States Armed Forces. The Capitals say those stars represent dedication, sacrifice, and leadership. The jersey’s numbers also received special attention. They feature characteristics inspired by historic script. The lettering includes pronounced contrast and refined serif details. Gold accents then add another layer to the design. They help create a ceremonial appearance throughout the uniform. More importantly, the Capitals connected the jersey to their ongoing military support. The organization has worked with military families, veterans, and service members for years.
That commitment includes the annual Standing USA Warriors Tournament. The event supports the USA Warriors Ice Hockey program. It features veterans who suffered injuries during combat. The Capitals also partner with VetTix. That partnership helps provide free or discounted tickets to military members and veterans. The new jersey will also support that mission financially. The Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation will auction signed specialty jerseys and pucks. The auction will benefit Our Military Kids, a nonprofit organization. The auction begins Tuesday, October 6, at noon. It will run through Thursday, October 15, at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the jersey arrives during a massive year for American history. The United States officially celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026. The National Archives recognizes July 4, 2026, as the major anniversary date. The occasion marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence. The Capitals therefore have a natural connection to the celebration.
Washington has long represented American history and government. The Capitals now bring that history onto the hockey rink through this design. The jersey also continues the franchise’s tradition of patriotic uniforms. The Capitals have used red, white, and blue throughout different periods of their history. Still, this jersey takes that connection much further. Rather than simply adding American colors, the Capitals built the design around service.
