The Dylan Larkin trade saga has taken another interesting turn, creating fresh speculation throughout the NHL. The Detroit Red Wings forward has reportedly expanded his list of acceptable trade destinations from three teams to 10. That development could finally help Detroit move its former captain following months of uncertainty. However, finding a trade partner remains complicated because of Larkin’s contract and Detroit’s asking price. According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Larkin has added seven potential destinations.
ESPN also confirmed the expanded list through an NHL source on October 20. The 30-year-old center originally identified three organizations when he requested a trade following the 2025-26 season. Those teams included the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights. Now, seven additional organizations could enter the conversation. Nevertheless, Larkin’s willingness to consider more destinations does not guarantee an immediate trade. Detroit must still find an organization willing to meet its demands. Meanwhile, Larkin continues playing for the only NHL franchise he has represented throughout his career.
Which 10 Teams Are on Larkin’s Trade List?
The reported list includes several Stanley Cup contenders and organizations looking to strengthen their center depth.
| Team | Conference |
| ——————– | ———- |
| Florida Panthers | Eastern |
| Minnesota Wild | Western |
| Vegas Golden Knights | Western |
| Dallas Stars | Western |
| Washington Capitals | Eastern |
| Carolina Hurricanes | Eastern |
| Utah Mammoth | Western |
| Tampa Bay Lightning | Eastern |
| New Jersey Devils | Eastern |
| Colorado Avalanche | Western |

Florida, Minnesota, and Vegas formed Larkin’s original three-team list. Dallas reportedly joined shortly afterward, while six other organizations expanded his options to 10. Interestingly, Larkin has not included any Canadian organizations among his preferred destinations. That includes the Montreal Canadiens, despite fans expressing interest during Detroit’s recent visit. However, these organizations represent acceptable destinations, not confirmed trade negotiations. Each team must evaluate its salary cap situation, roster needs, and Detroit’s potential asking price.
Why Does Larkin Want to Leave Detroit?
Larkin’s frustration centers on Detroit’s inability to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Red Wings have missed the postseason every year since 2016. Meanwhile, Larkin has spent most of his professional career waiting for the organization to become competitive again. Detroit selected Larkin with the 15th overall pick during the 2014 NHL Draft. The Michigan native eventually became the face of the franchise and served six seasons as captain. However, the organization’s prolonged rebuilding process has tested his patience. Larkin requested a trade following last season, creating tension between the player and management.
Former general manager Steve Yzerman acknowledged the request in June. Nevertheless, Yzerman made no promises about completing a deal. Detroit eventually removed Yzerman from his general manager position in July. The organization subsequently appointed Shawn Horcoff as interim general manager. Meanwhile, the Red Wings also removed Larkin’s captaincy before the 2026-27 season. Larkin acknowledged that his trade request carried consequences. However, he also made clear that he did not regret his decision.
Larkin’s Contract Creates Another Challenge
Larkin signed an eight-year contract worth approximately $69.6 million in March 2023. His contract carries an average annual salary cap hit of $8.7 million. Furthermore, his full no-trade clause runs through the 2027-28 season. That protection gives Larkin considerable control over his future. Detroit cannot simply trade him to whichever organization offers the strongest package. Instead, the Red Wings must negotiate with a team Larkin finds acceptable. Additionally, any potential trade partner must accommodate his substantial salary cap commitment.
The situation becomes even more complicated because Detroit wants immediate NHL talent in return. According to Sportsnet, the Red Wings prefer established players over packages centered on prospects and draft picks. That demand could discourage organizations hoping to acquire Larkin without weakening their current rosters. However, expanding his destination list gives Detroit more opportunities to negotiate. More interested organizations could potentially create competition and improve the eventual return.
Could the Tampa Bay Lightning Land Larkin?
One particularly interesting addition involves the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning already possess considerable offensive talent, including Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, and Jake Guentzel. However, adding Larkin would give Tampa Bay another experienced center with excellent offensive capabilities. His speed and two-way ability could strengthen the Lightning’s lineup. Furthermore, his playoff ambitions align with Tampa Bay’s expectations of competing for championships. Nevertheless, acquiring Larkin would present significant financial challenges.
Tampa Bay would need to create enough salary cap flexibility to accommodate his $8.7 million cap hit. Detroit would also demand a meaningful return. The Lightning would need to determine whether adding Larkin justifies sacrificing established talent or valuable future assets. Still, Tampa Bay’s inclusion creates an intriguing possibility for Lightning fans. A combination of Larkin, Point, and Kucherov could make an already dangerous offense even more formidable. However, no confirmed agreement or advanced negotiation currently establishes Tampa Bay as his eventual destination.
Florida, Vegas, and Colorado Offer Championship Opportunities
Florida remains an interesting possibility because of its recent championship success. The Panthers have established a winning culture and understand the demands of postseason hockey. Meanwhile, Vegas has consistently demonstrated its willingness to pursue established NHL stars. The Golden Knights rarely hesitate when opportunities arise to strengthen their championship ambitions. However, both organizations must consider their existing financial commitments. Colorado also presents an intriguing destination.
The Avalanche already feature Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar among their offensive leaders. Adding Larkin could strengthen their center depth and provide additional scoring options. Furthermore, Colorado’s competitive environment could appeal to a player seeking postseason success. Nevertheless, the Avalanche would face the same financial and trade-package questions as other interested organizations.
Dallas, Carolina, and New Jersey Could Enter the Conversation
Dallas has become another possible landing spot for Detroit’s former captain. The Stars have built a talented roster capable of competing against strong Western Conference opponents. Larkin could provide another experienced scoring option and strengthen their center rotation. Meanwhile, Carolina offers a different opportunity. The Hurricanes emphasize speed, puck possession, and defensive responsibility. Those characteristics could complement Larkin’s playing style.
New Jersey also presents an interesting possibility. The Devils feature talented offensive players and could benefit from additional veteran leadership. However, both Carolina and New Jersey must evaluate how Larkin would fit their existing rosters. Neither organization can ignore the financial implications of his contract. Additionally, Detroit’s preference for immediate NHL talent could complicate negotiations.
Minnesota, Utah, and Washington Complete the List
Minnesota has remained among Larkin’s preferred destinations since his initial trade request. The Wild could benefit from another experienced center capable of contributing offensively and defensively. Meanwhile, Utah represents an intriguing addition to his expanded list. The Mammoth have continued building their organization around a talented young core. Larkin could provide experience, leadership, and another scoring threat.
However, Utah would need to determine whether acquiring him fits its long-term roster construction. Washington also appears among the seven additional destinations. The Capitals could view Larkin as a valuable addition to their center depth. Furthermore, his experience could help an organization balancing immediate competitiveness with future roster decisions. Nevertheless, each potential destination faces different obstacles. The question involves more than whether these teams would welcome Larkin. They must also determine whether Detroit’s asking price makes financial and competitive sense.
Detroit Faces a Difficult Decision
Horcoff now faces one of the most important decisions of his tenure as interim general manager. Trading Larkin would mean losing an experienced center and one of Detroit’s most recognizable players. However, keeping an unhappy player could prolong uncertainty surrounding the organization. Larkin has accumulated more than 640 career points while establishing himself as a reliable NHL contributor. He also helped the United States capture Olympic gold during the 2026 Winter Games. His accomplishments demonstrate why interested teams could view him as an attractive trade target.
Meanwhile, Detroit must consider the message a potential trade sends to its fan base. Red Wings supporters have already endured a decade without playoff hockey. Losing another important player could create additional frustration. However, receiving established NHL talent might help Detroit reshape its roster. The organization must balance immediate competitiveness with its long-term future.
Final Thoughts: Will Larkin Finally Get His Trade?
Larkin’s expanded trade list represents an important development in Detroit’s ongoing situation. Moving from three acceptable destinations to 10 gives the Red Wings considerably more flexibility. However, the organization still controls whether a trade actually happens. Larkin’s contract, no-trade protection, and Detroit’s asking price to remain significant obstacles. Meanwhile, the potential destinations include several organizations with legitimate championship ambitions. Tampa Bay, Florida, Vegas, Colorado, and Dallas offer particularly interesting possibilities.
Carolina, New Jersey, Minnesota, Washington, and Utah could also explore opportunities if circumstances make sense. Nevertheless, fans should remember that appearing on Larkin’s list does not establish serious trade interest. Detroit must receive an acceptable offer before completing any transaction. The Red Wings also need to decide whether trading their former captain truly improves their future. For Larkin, the motivation appears clear. After spending his entire NHL career in Detroit, he wants an opportunity to compete for championships. His expanded list suggests greater flexibility about where that opportunity might come. The biggest question is no longer whether Larkin will consider leaving Detroit. It is whether Detroit can find the right deal. Until then, the NHL will continue watching one of the league’s most intriguing trade situations.
