The Clearwater Threshers opened a key series against the Tampa Bay Tarpons with plenty at stake. The matchup featured the top two teams in the Florida State League East Division. Clearwater entered the series with momentum after winning seven of its last 10 games. That strong finish helped the Threshers close July on a positive note. Earlier rain soaked the area, but the grounds crew prepared the field beautifully before first pitch. By game time, the weather looked familiar for Florida in late summer. Temperatures hovered around 90 degrees while heavy humidity challenged both teams throughout the evening.
The Tarpons took the field in gray uniforms with navy blue caps and navy-blue numbers. Meanwhile, the Threshers wore baby blue jerseys with white pants featuring red stripes. They completed the look with baby blue caps and navy-blue numbers on the backs of their jerseys. Clearwater wasted little time putting pressure on Tampa Bay. Center fielder Will Gasparino reached base to begin the offensive rally. Shortly afterward, right fielder Caden Bogenpohl stepped into the batter’s box looking for an early breakthrough.
Bogenpohl delivered exactly that. He crushed a two-run home run that sailed over the fence and energized the home crowd. His blast gave the Threshers a 2-0 advantage after the opening inning. The early lead allowed Clearwater to settle into the game with confidence. Both pitching staffs settled down during the next two innings. However, the Threshers struck again in the bottom of the third. Left fielder Brayden Bakes launched a solo home run to extend Clearwater’s lead. His drive pushed the advantage to 3-0 and kept the offensive momentum with the home team.
The Tarpons finally answered in the top of the fifth inning. Hans Montero drove in Bear Harrison to put Tampa Bay on the scoreboard. The RBI cut Clearwater’s led to 3-1 and gave the visitors renewed energy. Tampa Bay continued its comeback attempt one inning later. Paul Gutierrez-Contreras lined a single that scored Dax Kilby against Threshers pitcher Kevin Warunek. That run trimmed the deficit to just one, making the score 3-2 after six innings. Instead of letting the momentum slip away, Clearwater answered immediately. Will Vierling stepped to the plate and delivered another memorable swing. He blasted the Threshers’ third solo home run of the night. The powerful shot restored a two-run cushion and gave Clearwater a 4-2 lead.
The Threshers added one more insurance run later in the game. Austin Breedlove uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Bogenpohl to race home from third base. Bogenpohl crossed the plate for his second run after earlier launching the game’s first home run. That mistake stretched Clearwater’s advantage to 5-2. Meanwhile, Clearwater’s pitching staff continued making big pitches during the late innings. The defense backed those efforts with solid play across the field. Every out moved the Threshers closer to an important victory against their division rivals. The Tarpons entered the ninth inning needing three runs to extend the contest. However, Clearwater refused to give them any opening. The Threshers recorded a clean top of the ninth and closed out the victory without drama.
Clearwater secured a 5-2 win to claim the opening game of the series. Three home runs powered the offense while timely pitching protected the lead. Bogenpohl finished as one of the night’s biggest stars with a two-run homer and two runs scored. Bakes and Vierling also supplied solo home runs that proved crucial. The victory continued Clearwater’s strong stretch after a successful finish to July. Just as importantly, the Threshers gained an early edge in a series featuring the East Division’s top two teams. If the opener served as any indication, fans should expect another competitive battle between these talented clubs before the series concludes.
